given that the way we control our trains right now and the size of ones collection. got me to thinking given that the controls are going the way of phones and tablets via the new wtiu and lionels base 3.

I like my remotes as most of us here do. plus being cable and tether free is the only way to be at least for me.

now I have a fairly large mth engine collection for me and seem to keep getting new or new to me ps2 and 3 engines when I find good deals on roadnames that I like and collect.

I got several remotes when mth announced the last production run ever last year or so now. so I am good on remotes.

I also have 3 cab2's and two 990 bases. so lionel wise I am ok till I die also.

on the mth side though I only have one rev.L tiu with the usb port. my other tiu is one of the fist ever made back when they first came out I belive 2000 maybe.  I use it at the workbench for testing locos only.

the rev.L is used on my layout. my question is would it be wise to have a second rev.L as a backup failsafe just in case my rev.L tiu ever goes bad? I realize they are pricey and can be hard to find. if one shows up at a fair price would you snag it up if it were you?

first the remotes, now the z4000 gees. guess I am getting old in this hobby. after mike announced the last z4000's today I wonder if the prices on the bay will double tommorow.

just look at the lionel 990 and 993 sets. when a good deal came up on a used but in new condition cab2 I had to get it. I always wanted at least 3 for operators on my future layout.

I know there will be some who say move on and get with the times man. I will say it like my dad used to say it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

AAMOF, IMO, it would be wise to have several backups!  I have a number of TIU's, one is on the layout, one is on the bench, and a few are in boxes, tested and ready to pick up the slack if one of the ones on duty falters.

I have an extra Legacy #990, a couple spare CAB2 remotes, and a couple of the CAB1L remotes.  I'm in no hurry to move on, operating my trains from my phone doesn't do anything for me.  FWIW, I have both the MTH and Lionel WiFI, so I have actually exercised that option, and I prefer the physical remote.

I purchased a spare TIU when they were last available from MTH.  It's still in the box, unopened.  So yes, I agree a spare TIU for insurance is a good idea.

If I somehow burn through my current TIU AND the backup, I'll likely consider a wholesale change to a new power / control system for my trains.  Battery power intrigues me as an alternative.  Maybe I'll never get there given I have a TIU backup, but that is on the table for my "plan C."

I'm less concerned about the remotes though.  I might be in the minority on the forum, but I much prefer the user interface on the app to run my trains.  I have not purchased a spare remote since my current remote gets so little use.

I'd get that spare TIU out and make sure it's 100% functional, and also update it to the latest level of software.

SInce MTH is producing an "improved" TIU that supports WiFi directly, why would you turn your world upside down with battery power?

I guess there's room for folks that prefer the app to the remote here.   We don't have to agree on that point however.

Hi John, Good idea on checking out my new-in-the-box TIU.  I bought as MTH announced their closing and devised my “plan C” when I thought MTH was dead.  Absent significant electronics knowledge to repair my own stuff, plan C was born as a last resort.  The advantages of battery power are intriguing as I mentioned, but as long as there is a DCS option I’ll continue on that path

On the issue of remotes, sometimes I wonder if I’m the sole DCS user that likes the app!
