Hey guys. I'm pretty new around here. Joine a few years ago and finally getting around to starting on a train room. My son turns 10 soon so figured it's time to start teaching him some building and wiring and such and he has loved trains since he was little. We have a bunch of my fathers old postwar lionel and some newer thomas trains and lower end lionel.
I am creating a train room out of what was basically and 8X8 closet with a about a two foor by 20 ft hallway. I had a bunch of shelving in there that I removed, took out two studes every foour feet for the lenght of the roon and built cabinets into the wall. I gained back all the stotage I lost from removing the shelves (and then some) and gained the top of the cabinets to run the trains. There is also an upper shelf track that will have reversing loops at both ends and there will be a layout table in the 8X8 end.
We have lots of ideas to make an interesting track plan that should be fun to run. We have tons of old gargraves track that is in rough shape but Jake is cleaning it up and checking it for good electrical continuity. I know using old rusty track has pitfalls but we are doing this on a budget so that's what we have to work with. I will be adding electrical drops on every section to ensure good operation. It will just involve some periodic maintenance since much of the plating will be removed in the cleanup.
Here are a couple pics of progress so far.
