This is my first post as I just got in to model trains after a 50 year absence. Unfortunately I screwed up my pride and joy Rail King 2-8-8-8-2 Triplex with Proto Sound 3. It was running fine but the head light was flickering so I pulled the body/boiler and found that the plug was not plugged all the way in, easy fix. Then it went south! When I reinstalled the boiler I must have pinched a wire and when I powered up the loco it started to smoke from the cab and boiler. It burned and melted the purple or blue wire from the lights which I replaced but now it does nothing and the dcs says engine not found. Did I damage the boards and is it fixable? I love this loco especially pulling 12 coal cars up my grade. Please help if you know someone that can repair it or give me, a guy with VERY limited electrical knowledge, some advice, I would really appreciate it. By the way I am in Northeast Ohio and would love a local repair but I can ship it where ever is needed.

For one thing, you might be able to fix it if you're not scared to pull the boiler off to check on a light. So that's a good thing.
Next up, Stockyard Express is in Oberlin. I believe they repair MTH trains.
Unfortunately, I'm not that good yet at trouble shooting boards and whatnot. But people here do have that knowledge! I actually have a Triplex too that seems to have a bad charging board.
Thanks, I am hoping someone on here with the knowledge reads my post. I am about 30 miles from Akron, Youngstown and Cleveland so we are not to far apart.
I would try Stockyard Express. Their service man Brian is excellent and has fixed everything I brought to him.
All good advice above. If I may add something, when asking for help here please add the product number and a more informative subject than "Help". Something like "MTH 30-XXXX Tri-Plex shorting". You will probably get some better hits on the subject and having the exact product number will help the MTH techs on the board give you the best advice. The gentlemen above certainly have given you some great advice though. Good Luck I hope you get it fixed.
Yeah @MartyE raises a good point. Because you'll have different battery setups and such based on different part numbers. I remember dealing with that fiasco when I was trying to figure out what's wrong with mine.
Let us know how it goes! I been planning to just do mine on my own as a learning opportunity but maybe it won't be worth the fuss.
Thanks for the insight, I will try to edit my title when I get home and can access that info. I will for sure remember to add it next time. Thanks guys.
Chances are the boiler board is damaged. I can test boards and replace if necessary. Depending on extent of damage and what wire was shorted, some times it takes tender board out too. E-mail in profile. G
