I need some advise from all you pros. I will apologize up front as this post may get a little long. If you don't want to read it all go to the cliff notes below.

I am new to the model train world. My son is head over heals for model trains so for Christmas we got him his first train set, a conventional O-Gauge Polar Express. Santa left it for him under the tree and he has been on cloud nine since. When I was shopping for it was when I was first introduced to LionChief. I love the two announcements Tom Hanks makes and the chugging noise, but wasn't sure it was worth the additional $100. So I talked with a friend that has been around it for a while and he steered me towards the conventional. His and my reasoning is that this way my son will have a transformer and can run any Locomotive (Conv, LC or LC+) on his track. That and the additional $100 made the conventional the choice.

Now I have to take a step back and include that when I went to the hobby store to look at the PE I saw the conventional, the LC and also the 10th Anniversary. When I asked the guy working there that seemed to know what he was talking about what the differences between the standard PE LC and the LC 10th Annv. was he said the decals on the Loco and the bridge. So that didn't make it any more attractive than the standard. However, now that I have been spending time here at ORG and looking at trains on youtube I see that the 10th annv. actually has more lines spoken by Tom Hanks (plus the original 2 lines and chugging). So that upped the cool factor for me. Now I am sitting here wondering if I actually got the right/best one.

So here is my question, is the 10th annv really worth buying a second PE? Do you guys think the 10th annv will hold its value more then the standard LC PE? We are not buying this as a investment as I am hoping this is a hobby my son passes down to his kids, but holding value does come into the equation somewhat. I would probably keep the conventional set, or sell/trade just the train, so he would still have a transformer to run his track plus I got a pretty good deal on the set. What do you guys think? What would you guys do? What do you think I should do?

Cliff-notes:

I bought a Conventional Polar Express set for my son as his first train set and am now wondering if I should have gotten the 10th annv Polar Express set instead. This is our first set up and possibly will be running older Locomotives on it. Is it worth it to pick up a 10th annv set now.

I agree with John.

Since you have one, a second one is not going to give you that much benefit.

Now Had you got my opinion prior to buying I'd recommend the 10th Anniversary one.

That's what I bought and the kids love it.

Total of 6 sound clips, 4 tom Hanks, 1 Santa and one of the Ghost.

Note, there is no Set with Lionchief Plus so far. those are separate sale engines.

And while I suppose you can run a Lionchief engine with a variable voltage transformer it is not required.

Personally, I think the LC Polar Express runs way too fast. I plan on doing some surgery on the engine to change that while keeping the smoke and headlight voltage maxed.

I do not expect anyone else to do so, I have the skills, gunrunnerjohn, GGG, and some others have them. Most folks do not.

I agree with GRJ (and Russell) on another purchase and also just using the one you have to see how things go with it. There are all kinds of accessories, more track, rolling stock, switches, etc. you can add to the one you already have to make things more interesting if need be.

In my opinion trains are becoming more like all other electronic equipment, cars, appliances, etc. Every few years an improved, better and more advanced one comes out leaving the one you have being obsolete and of little value. Everyone wants the newer models with the latest features. Purchase trains because you like them or think your kids will like them and enjoy playing with them. Don't worry about the future values.

I started out with the conventional set.  I'm not into electronics but I wanted sound.  So, I spent $100 for the PE tender with chug and sound.  I then bought the Tom Hanks car that talked.  It doesn't work well with the trainsound tender.  So, I'm now into this the price of the conventional + $200.  So, I sold it all and last year bought the Lionchief version.  Spent $300 when it 1st came out and I believe right after Christmas it was closer to $200.  I decided I was out of the bizz (didn't last by the way) and I sold the Lionchief Thanksgiving week for $310.  I also don't like the fact that if the remote goes bad you can't run the Lionchief engine.  So, until they come out with the Lionchief Plus PE set, I'm holding off.  You know it's coming soon.  I'd hang on to the set you have.  If he loses interest, sell it late November.  If you want to upgrade to a new PE version in the future, keep your transformer and track and sell the rest late November and then not be in a hurry with the new one...prices will go down.   Jeff

Yes, I kind of have the same feeling with the Polar Express.  There have been so many versions out that it's creating confusion for the consumer.  I think Lionel should really make a page on their site detailing each set and what the differences are.

My advice is don't think of any train set purchase as final and that you'll keep each set forever.  You can sell used Christmas train sets for great prices in Nov/Dec on eBay or Craigslist and get the bulk of your money back.

Just as a background, I have the conventional (with the add-on tender and talking car), bought the first LionChief set last year, and have been wondering about the 10th anniversary as well now that it's out.  I'm trying to figure out what I want to do.  In all likelihood, I will sell the conventional set next year.

I'm with gunrunnerjohn on this.  See if your son is still as enthusiastic at this time next year.  If he is, then you can do as others have suggested, sell your current set and upgrade to whatever set is the latest from Lionel.  As chinatrain99 suggested, it may be a Lionchief Plus.  If you can shop early, you might find better prices.  Prices increase as you get closer to the holidays, then drop after.  Last year, I found a Lionchief PE on Amazon for $169 after Christmas.  So I bought it.

Hmmm.  I may be a bad one to take advice from as we now have the original conventional set (converted to TMCC), the smoking whistle loco, the Lionchief set and a scale set.  Jeez!   Good luck.  Glad to hear a young want likes trains!

I've been running the LionChief set on the double spiral since August and am very happy with it. I'll probably try to buy a 10th anniversary set in February if there are any available. I to am looking forward to Lionel producing a LionChief + version of the Engine and tender; hopefully with all the announcements included in the anniversary set.

what caught my eye was this you mention

I would never sell it let him enjoy it and see if his interest stays in the hobby if not pack it away after all how many of us came back to the hobby years later.

Dad never saw me coming back to the hobby years later but recall fondly that first train set under the tree parents bought me in the early 60s and wish i still had it .

Creating childhood memories are priceless and having that very first train set that started it

no matter what its worth or how banged up along the way it may have get the times with Dad

will always be remembered .

You know, after reading Dieseler's response, I have to change my opinion.  If that is your son's first train, never sell it.  Dieseler's response made me think about my first Lionel set bought by my dad for what was then about a week's salary (1952).  It's still here.  If we had sold it, it would not have been around for me to give to my son!  It doesn't run much but it is a pleasure to see and handle, even with all of the dents, cracks and scratches I subjected it to.  Thanks Dieseler!

Thanks for all the great responses guys. Still mulling over exactly what I am going to do. If I do end up going to the 10th anniversary right now I was just going to tell him that I bought an mod/upgrade addition that added the announcements. That way it is still his first train from Santa. I don't want to take that memory from him.

Follow on question:

Do you guys think they will go back to (or really just continue with) just the two announcements on the standard LC like it was this year, keeping it so the only way to get all the announcements is with the 10th annv. Or do you think they will add those additional announcements to the standard LC next year?

My two cents-
It is a very short amount of time before manufacturers offer huge amounts of sound in various up-gradable sound files.
This year for our community layout I put a wireless bluetooth speaker in the display, (I bought at home depot for $18 and it is the side of a golf ball), and I fed it all kinds of great clips from my smart phone. I had 18 different PE sound clips, as well as cows, pigs, and different "odd" noises just to play with so I could see folks reactions on their face. The speaker lasted 6 straight hours on a charge.

Another endorsement of Gunrunner John's advice from me.

The one thing you need to keep in mind is not all of Lionel's remotes and systems can be used interchangeably.  Why, I have no idea but I highly recommend a little more research before you leap.  That and don't ever introduce "holding it's value" into your evaluation process for anything you will be running.

Enjoy your new set!

All we can do is speculate here, who knows what they will come up with? Lionel is the only one that can answer this one correctly.

After reading this thread I figured I'd chime in.. I bought the first edition lionchief PE when it came out. We like it and it's pretty cool but after seeing legacy stuff on YouTube, it makes you want something better. So I bought a really cool MTH Berkshire to pull the PE passenger cars. But wait! Then I had to purchase the MTH remote with TIU.. Another 300.00 plus the 400 for the MTH Berkshire.. So now I bought some MTH 60 foot Madison cars and I'm in the process of painting them the PE colors. I wanted more scale like cars that don't need the 054 radius. I'll still always keep the original lionchief PE tho. It's not as cool as the MTH one and it's even smaller than the MTH berk. But it's still cool and it will hopefully run for many years. The smoke unit sucks in it which was another reason I wanted something better. But now my wife complains about the MTH berk smoking her out of the house! Haha so pick your purchases with the thought of, it's only money and get your enjoyment at any cost, cause we're only here a short time! Remember money comes and goes, but your memories last forever. Especially when your at work daydreaming of your sons new 1000,00 trains you just got him! Lol

I first got into this hobby when I received a Polar Express set just over six years ago for Christmas. It was the conventional version (no LionChief at the time), but even six years later I haven't considered selling the set even though I've got more engines and my layout was upgraded to be strictly command controlled just two years after receiving that set. Nowadays it just runs under the tree when the holidays come around. To me that set has more sentimental value than anything else and I wouldn't sell it to get the one that quite literally has more bells and whistles. That's just my two cents.

Oh, I would have hated having two trains to play with at that age ....

Its a simple thing. More trains, more fun, even the "duplicates"

If its "your thing" why not.

Just like Ronco at Christmas, it cuts chances of nothing moving around the tree, in half in just seconds

You're bordering on being a real collector now. A TCA# is next.

Picking up a variety of other cars and accessories kiddo shows interest in, may help keep his interest higher. Is the old one his his train, or yours? Mention it. Plant a seed for a discussion on the trains, and see if it grows. Ask, and use his advice for the new. If he want's something else, turn the anniversary version into a fun low ball price hunt for you guys; a "maybe, hey what do you think?" thing

Better and best will hardly matter compared to the memories

I guess I chime in here too. As a parent of three children, I can speak from experience. Stick with the conventional engine and if anything get the upgraded tender. Then wait and see. If his interest continues, get him a diffrent RTR set( not another PE set) that has the LC+. This way if the remote fails, at least he will still have transformer control. This is important for two reasons. On the PE LC if the remote fails, that's it, you can't run it any other way and you will never hear the end of it. It also most likely kill his interest in trains. My son is a prime example. He( and my middle daughter) wanted the Harry Potter set. So I bought it. After about a month His interest waned and it sat for months. He was more interested in my trains and would run them using DCS. Then he wanted N scale trains, so I bought home a set and extra track so he could build a small layout in his room. After about Four months, that to eventually just sat. Last Christmas, I bought him a 1/43 digital slot car set and integrated it into my layout. He stills plays with it.  Likes the fact it's part of the layout. Now he has seen the PE set and didn't like it. But now that I have bought the S gauge version, his words" looks more like a train" he has been running it( he is ten yrs old now) Now understand, I bought it for me for that very reason and it runs booth on the remote or transformer control, which is also what I like. The blue tooth idea is good and will give you more options for sound bites. I would definitely go with that, but until his interest has become solid with trains( developing it with different RTR sets) and yours. My recommendation is to stick with what you got.
