A few weeks back at York I picked up a Williams Brass Challenger, it is a older unit.  When I run it on my layout with an MTH Z4000 I am having trouble when I press the direction on the transformer, It is sporadic at best how it responds to the direction changes and for the most part stays in forward, However when I run the engine on my work bench using an older Lionel LW transformer it responds perfectly to the directional changes.  Does anyone else experience the same issue and if so how have you fixed the issue.

Without a fix I have two options.

1. Upgrade the engine to Lionel Legacy

2. Sell the engine to someone that uses older Lionel transformers

Any help is greatly appreciated

Steve

First off, some reverse boards require a longer direction change power interrupt to reliably change directions.  I've see a few boards that don't respond to direction changes reliably with electronic transformers, many times a longer interruption will mitigate the problem.

There is no true "Legacy Upgrade", but you can have TMCC with cruise control.

You did forget one other option, simply replace the existing conventional reverse board with a different board.

All the guys gave you good advice.  First I would follow what John stated on the time to reverse.  If you are using the Z4K handle to go on and off, that may be a roll of the dice.  The direction button will make sure the board sees zero voltage.  That is an old board anyway.  Dave hit on what I would do.  The Dallee #400 board in my opinion is the greatest.  Not much money and very easy to install.  Cut the wires off the DCRU and hook them to the Dallee and you are rocking.

Hello L.I.TRAIN

I put in a new Dallee # 400 e-unit in my 1984 era. early Williams brass Hudson about 2 months ago and it never missed a beat !! (worked every time on my Z4000).  It is very small in size wise and you can even put it in the challenger's boiler.  Very compact in size, 4 amp model is good size for O gauge train.
