I have had a pair of these in the closet, and want to service/lube the gears and replace the traction tires. This set of engines has a much different way of connecting the motor/truck.
I don't know about "safely", but you are going to be taking a lot more screws out than you're used to! These are the style that you actually have to remove a bunch of screws and separate the truck bottom to get at the gears.
Is there a schematic or diagram showing where all the screws are? Just learning how to remove the shell was a journey.
That would make it too easy. On trucks similar to this you will have to remove the pickup roller. The screw that holds the roller on also is one that holds the truck together. Also look for the screws close to the motor from above. If you see any these usually have to come out too. No idea why Lionel designs them this way. Most all MTH and Williams diesel trucks come off with a single screw.
Thanks for the diagram. I will remove the pickup roller and check for other screws, I sure hope that the traction tires last a while, this is definitely a time consuming labor, but they are great looking engines.
The real irony is there are at least two designs that have multiple screws and all the gears fall out before you can get the motor off. Then the fun begins, the bearings have a flat that you have to get in the right place putting back together and it sometimes is a real challenge to get all the stuff lined up and a screw or two in.
