Help with MTH PS-3 Y3

I have a 20-3515-1 handy PS3 Y3, will that work? Or did you mean Railking?

Actual as installed pictures. L shaped motor bracket the leg faces forward under the flywheel and mounts to frame with 3 screws. The tach bracket screws to the face of the motor sandwiching the motor mount bracket to the face of the motor. This then places the tachometer under the stamped metal wire guide bracket.

Just realized something doesn't jive from the parts listing, that 20-3515-1 flywheel is actually as measured 27mm Diameter and 13mm Thick.

Edit, to be clear, I'm not saying my 27mm diameter vs 26.85mm is the "mistake", I'm saying that the PS3 Pittman bracket is used with a 26.8(5)mm Diameter flywheel and the parts listings- there may be more- might need to reflect that. A 30mm flywheel is too large for that bracket and will interfere.

A 30mm flywheel is too large for that bracket and will interfere.

I've noticed Premier PS3 steam standardized on a 27mm diameter flywheel and all use the same tach reader bracket. Most prior PS2 Premier steam used 30-33mm flywheels, the same tach reader bracket, and the 30mm versions got a tach reader with a larger spacing than the 33mm version. You can't use a 30mm flywheel on a motor with a PS3 tach bracket, the flywheel hits the bracket. I think the 27mm flywheel and bracket assembly was standardized for PS3 steam because there is no spacer on a PS3 tach reader, so everything needed to be interchangeable between all locomotives.

I discovered this a couple years ago as I Frankenstein a lot of parts together to build locomotives.

If you're using factory PS3 electronics use the IH0000490 tach bracket and the BE1100012 26.8mm flywheel. It's the drop-in replacement.

Thanks guy.  This helps greatly.  Yes premier.  I had talked to Mike, the breakdown was done with a PS-2 5V version which is why I was questioning the 30mm flywheel with him.  Most PS-3 premier have used a smaller flywheel, but I want to confirm.  Also, does the pittman bracket look right to your version Vernon?

The other interesting thing is that the Y-3 is not 2 rail convertibles like normal Premier.  No switch, tender trucks have bronze bushing both sides.  I guess they just used the 5V chassis when they made this PS-3 version.

I guess those flywheels are the same at 27mm x 13mm.  Duplicate part number maybe???  G

BRACKET / TACH READER / FOR PITTMAN MOTOR

I did this search just for comparison- and yes, the IH0000490 appears to be the correct PS3 bracket.

BI0000102 is the correct drop in bracket/motor mount.

Frankly any Pittman motor mount will work. I've used Hudson ones in Northerns, etc. If the screw holes don't line up where I want them I just drill and tap new ones. The only really difference between them is the location of the holes for mounting the bracket to the chassis.

I'm guessing, based on who you got the locomotive from, that not much is "factory correct", since it's probably a mix of parts from several locomotives.

With a little bit of filing, grinding, and drilling you can mix PS1/PS2/PS3 era parts together and everything works.

That one was an intact PS3 Y3, …..missing the motor, mount, obviously the tach mount, & dog bone …..I didn’t even let George look at the other two monsters……….😂😂😂

My class A is in a class by itself buddy, ….that one is a hodge podge ……some PS1, some PS2, some not PSanything ……
