I recently purchased a second hand Railking 4-8-8-4. Unfortunately the motor mount, part no. BI-1200002, just fell apart into several pieces when handling the train. It doesn't appear that MTH has this in stock or will ever have it back in stock. Does anyone know where I might be able to find this part? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Might be tougher to do but if one is still stable, you could make a mold of it and pour it in plastic. Some of the Alumilite products I've used stand up very well. Just a thought. I'd rather have to be able to run if it were mine.

I've made my own parts and was happy with how well they worked. Hard to get the finest details without air pockets but I would think this would be easy.

Does the Premier Allegheny use the same mount? ( I have that engine)

Thanks for the suggestion. I've made resin parts before and was thinking about trying to make a copy of this, so that may be option to try Alumilite. I would really love to run this rather than put it on a shelf and I don't want to sell it knowing that it's not 100% functional.

It looks like the Railking Allegheny uses the same mount but not sure about the Premier version. The MTH website doesn't have a parts diagram for that model. Maybe if i'm lucky, someone will chime in with a spare part.

Premier is completely different, using a single large horizontal can motor.  RailKing articulateds have more in common mechanically with diesels than other steam locos.

Now having said that the question arises as to whether diesels have motor mounts compatible with RK artics. That one I cannot answer.

OK, I guess me making a copy of the premier would not work then.

Doesn't sound like it. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that someone may respond with a donor or spare part. Also, on Monday, I'll try a couple MTH service centers to see if they have any advice. Being the front and rear mounts are exactly the same and the front one is in perfect condition, would you be willing to make a copy if I sent it to you? I'd definitely make sure your compensated for your time, materials and effort.

I've read this and I'm considering it. It's not fool proof and I've had some failure rate. So it would take me more to produce than someone else who does it regularly. I've probably made around a dozen parts with varying success. I did get most attempts corrected, now I'm reserved at attempting difficult new stuff. Just because it takes me three or four attempts sometimes. That results in some wasted time and money.

You have to pick the correct mold making material so the shape is retained. You also have to pick the correct resin to get the perfect balance of strength vs. workable mold time. This part looks straight forward and although there's a thin area, I believe I could get it right. I just have a pile of work to do in front of me already. I'll think about it....

Jimmyz, I think a call to MTH is in order. They may be able to come up with something that will work. Also try putting this on a “want to buy “ post. Someone may have a junker laying around.

So, I reached out to a few MTH service centers and so far all have said the part is not available from them or through MTH.

I did find a CNC Machinist that's only a couple miles away from me. They say they will do a single part but I haven't gotten a quote yet. I'm waiting for a couple more service center responses. If I have no luck finding the part, I may go the CNC route.
