Hi,

Just got a MTH Cab Forward set (30-1650-1E) with PS 3. I am running in conventional. The first ten minutes were fine running the engine and tender. Hooked up ten cars and on the third lap I stopped the train to answer the phone. When I went to start it up, the engine failed to move. The rear engine started to spin and the front assembly was locked. Sounds were fine. I checked under the engine and saw no obvious signs that were causing a problem.  When the engine was running, the amps were about 1.2.  Amps were 4.7 with the front assembly binding on something. Any ideas or things to check before I sent it back for warranty repair.

Thanks,

Bob

i had one mth diesel do the same thing and found one small grain of sand grit, one little piece and the one grain got between the 2 gears of the wheels gears and motor drive gear and locked it up solid i took a small screw driver and took the  dirt out and fixed it, my was drawing over 4 amps and if you keep running it like that you'll burn up or fry the board FET's.Make sure you can turn the flywheel  freely with your hand in both directions.

if you don't find any dirt or debris in the gears  there might be a bend drive rod or piston on the wheels, check everything carefully and ONLY test buy turning the flywheel by hand in both directions and go threw a 360 degree of the wheel and rod's etc.  otherwise if you draw to many amps you will damage the board!

Good luck !

Bob had a similar issue with a premiere diesel a few years back and it was due one of the motors was bad, once replaced it ran fine. However with mine I bought the engine from a friend who only tested it and shelved it for a few years so without MTH warranty, I used a 3rd party service for the repair.
