"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

I'm into 3 rail and also have a good size 3 RAil layout, but also for my sister she has an HO Layout she's in the process of expanding. Which brings me to one question. I remember Big Boy Eliot 4005 that showed how he did his manual switch machine that at a cabinet door or draw handle and he could pull it forward and backward to manually switch his switches. So I thought I would ask, is there another way to manually switch an HO Switch without using the Caboose Hobbies Manual Switches? I want to go the same route as Elliot did the way the style is. Drill the hole and have the knob to grab to switch the track. The photo below shows you the track area I'm talking about on my sister & I's HO Layout. And as you can see short tracks which are going to be for parking engines. Now there's been things done to the layout since Oct 15th, but the yard and engines tracks are the same accept for the back engine yard where I got rid of that triple track going to be switch. Now it's going to be a #4 left. Also I have a small desk or workbench in front and cannot reach though's tracks unless on step stool or ladder. So that's why I ask about the knobs. Anyway, let me know your ideas. Even if it's from O Gauge or 3 Rail. I like to hear other peoples ideas. Also if anyone has photos. Thanks.

Tom, a friend has used bicycle brake handles and cables to remotely operate his manual switches on his layout. Works well for him and when I finish my tinplate layout, I plan on using his idea to operate my manual switches that are going to be difficult to reach.

I use New Rail Models Blue Point Switch Machine controllers.  I use Sullivan Models Golden Rod attached with a clevis for the operating lever, but you could also use a coat hanger or another similar stiff wire depending on the installation.  Below is a picture of the Blue Point installed, it is the same mounting style as a Tortoise.

There is a cheaper version out there called a BullFrog, which can be found at the following link:

Can't say how good it is, I've never tried it, but it is cheaper than the Blue Point.

Both of these manual controllers also have auxiliary contacts for powering your frogs, or controlling signals.

Jerry

Jerry, thanks for the link. One thing that surprised me though, the manual switch frogs are separate from the rods. Thanks though for the links.

Dave, I can understand what you mean by the brake handles. The question I have is, do you have any photos so I can see how you setup it. This does interest me. Thanks.
