I use a booking site to see what is available, where it is and how much.  I use Hotels.com, and have used Expedia and Priceline in the past.  Never had a problem with any of them.  A quick look at Hotels.com shows that there are still rooms available in the York area.  I don't know what you consider "medium priced" but you definitely want to avoid the cheap rooms (read the reviews of the hotel before you book).  Also, most of the decent hotels' parking lots are reasonably secure, but I would look at the Google Maps' satellite views of the hotels you consider to see the lot's layout and what else is in the area (I do this more to ensure space for parking and maneuvering  with a trailer is available).  You can always call the hotel and ask if they have security cameras watching their parking lots.

My approach has been to use a loyalty program - good rates (I've never seen any of the aggregators beat what I pay), points for free rooms, and less hassle if there's an issue.  I usually use Wyndham Rewards, since that includes the Wyndham Garden and La Quinta, but I'm sure that anyone's preferred chain has one.

The OP mentioned just wanting a room for Tuesday; I just checked Wyndham's hotels in York, and there are several places available.  Wednesday and Thursday are the hard nights.  Checking at the last minute sometimes works - might snag a last-minute cancellation.

And as @Andy Hummell mentioned above, be sure to read the reviews.
