Curious if any of you collectors consider your collection "Done" with a certain RR, freight car, locomotive, etc.

For example, I would consider my collection Done with Amtrak Heritage/phase one paint and F40ph's once Lionel delivers this Heritage set and Sunset Models/3rd rail delivers the SDP40f and Superliner I's

I would now have the Lionel scale PhI passenger set,

Atlas O San Francisco Zephyr,

GGD Amtrak El Capitan

GGD Amfleet 1 phI, II, III

GGD superliner I phII & III.

Atlas O Bombardier phIII Horizon coaches

Anyone else?

Well sir, tellyawhut. I'll consider it done when I get a transformer. Got a one-timer Groucho Marx set, looks great with the bowtie, glasses and mustachio across the boiler front, and I know that's a big-time collector item if there ever was one. Sure would like to run it, tho'. Wondering if the 'stash would make it thru my tunnel, and I guess that's why I'm holding off on a transformer for now. You guys with bucks are weird, too...

Just picked up the last prewar standard gauge 500 series freights to complete my collection of every color scheme.  Not every variation, but I’m happy with the really nice 517 coal set caboose and 513 cream and maroon cattle car and that’s all I need.  I have really nice sets of blue and brown baby states and my dad’s gray # 10 set with passenger cars, another #10 and a brown 318, a blue comet 390, a really sweet 384, a 385, and an 1835 that are all original and run great.  I have another original brown #10 and a beautiful restored 390 under repair at a shop, the 390 is being fickle for some reason, but should come together.  I have a nice original 392 with a hitch in his giddyup but have a replacement motor that someday will get swapped out.  Once these 3 engines are fixed my collection is complete.  Don’t need a 400. Oh yeah I have an ok maroon 380 with passenger cars that has 2 cars with 200 sized wheels and 2 with 500 sized wheels.  That is a project I can handle.  Also have 3 #8s, one a beautiful olive green that needs headlights.  Oh yeah, a set of red passenger cars, not so great to go with the red #8 I have.  More than I thought now that I thought about it, so I’m done collecting.  Want to build a small layout to get the track off the floor. Might get a few buildings down the road but really don’t want a big collection cuz I rent and never know when I’ll have to move them along.  Fix what needs fixing and be happy with what I have.  Got out of O gauge, but still have the triple lash up Wabash GP7 set, a NYC PWCC Hudson set, and CNW GP7 and caboose that I might take to a club to run once in a while, and TMCC CAB1 setup to run what I want to run, so I’m done.

Cheers,       W1

Well I am essentially done except for a couple of things I want to add to my operating railroad. Of course every time a custom MTH run is announced, I might find something I did not know I needed or wanted to have. I do not see myself as a collector, just to have something on display. I want to run the engines and cars I have. Those that no longer interest me, I sell.

That said I just picked up a used MTH Premier SP DayLight 8 car passenger set to replace a 4 car Rail King set I bought a few years ago. I am totally surprised the only real difference is the length of the cars - height and width are identical. Plus the Rail King has passengers! Now I am thinking why would I want to sell the RK set?   Decisions --- Decisions

Forgot - While I mostly model Chicago and Western RRs. I do have a fondness for the Pennsy GG1 and the Norfolk and Western J class. I have passenger sets for both lines and am considering selling them off. I have a P5A to match up with the Pennsy passengers (its not a GG1 but close)  and am watching for a Premier J at a reasonable price to complete the consist. But at the same time, neither really go with what I am modeling, except to pretend each is some sort of excursion coming out west for a visit.  That is exactly what happened when I saw the prototype 611 in Wheaton a number of years ago.  What a stunning piece of engineering and design. Aw heck, too much of an emotional attachment to sell them off.  I have the space and don't need the cash at this point.  They stay for now.

Only one unicorn left: a Weaver B&M P-4 Pacific. Missed out twice on one of those.

That would be it. There are a very few "nice to have's", but I no longer buy those.

There are, however, several pieces, mostly steam, but not all, that have never been produced, nor will they ever be, that could make me crack the wallet. Can't get into all that.
