I'm new to Legacy, so this is probably a basic question.  I could not find the answer in the manual.

I have a Milwaukee F7 ABA Legacy set.  One A is powered,  the other has lights, a smoke unit and electrocoupler.  The B unit has no features.  I will run them in standard configuration with the unpowered A reversed.

What is the best way to set this up in my Legacy remote?

1.  Assign both A units the same address

2.  Give them separate addresses and set up a "Train"

With option 1, do you lose separate control of the electrocouplers and no directional lighting?

It seems option 2 is better.

Do I use the orange module that comes with the powered A to set up the unpowered A, or should I set it up manually?

Thanks

Bob

Bob-

The best way to address the A-A set (the B unit does not count, as it does not have a Legacy receiver) would be to assign each unit its own ID. Using the lash-up/train feature on the remote will allow you to run the set together while retaining the ability to access the features of both units.

It is possible to set both A units as the same ID too, but then each engine will respond the same way to whatever command you issue. This is a good idea for commands like smoke unit on/off, but then problems arise when it comes to opening couplers. For example, pressing the "front coupler" button on the remote will open the front couplers on both the powered and unpowered A units at the same time, even though the unpowered A unit is connected to the rest of the train.

The best way to describe how Legacy (and TMCC) works would be to use a TV analogy. Picture your locomotive as the TV, and Legacy as the broadcast station. Several TV sets can display the same show simultaneously as long as all of the tuners are set to the same channel. Thus Legacy is broadcasting commands, and any locomotive set to that digital ID# assigned to that command will respond.
