I think you can remove the brake pipe from the bottom of the car before removing the coupler box cover. Atlas sells a replacement coupler (Part #7057) to fit that box. From the picture it is the new version and Atlas says it's a stronger design.

 

I had switched some Atlas cars over to "transition cars" and broke a coupler yesterday at the club. I'm going to bite the bullet and drill/tap the cars for Kadees.

Highly recommend using Kadee's. I like the new more scale head version (740/745 is equivalent to the 805). 
 
The newer Atlas knuckle couplers are better, but I've never had a problem with Kadee couplers.
