Do the 4.x files work easily or are there any known issues?

I never had 4.x, but have opened v4.x files with no problems here. It's my understanding you can not open v5 files with v4. I would say install and go!

Should have added this, don't know about v4 but in v5 save your work often, it crashes a lot. I think it has something to do with the undo function, but can't really pinpoint the problem.

That is good news. I have some basic design work to get done asap. Steve Ross will be in town for a train show next month and I want to buy what I can while he is here. I think it would be useful to have some live Q&A. When I start laying track I will post some pics I have some interesting 'terrain' obstacles to deal with.

RR-Track does not allow you to save in old formats for backward compatibility, but I've also been able to open v4 files that folks have posted or emailed me without any problem.

I don't remember the version that came with my R-T-R set, but I upgraded to get more track libraries than just the RealTrax library that is included. If you plan to stick with RealTrax, then I don't believe you'll get more functionality by upgrading if your set came with v5 and has the simulation function.

Strongly agree with this advice. I get random crashes frequently with RR-Track v5, so I make sure to hit Save often (CTRL+S shortcut works too).

RR-Track is pretty quirky compared to most other graphic design and CAD software I've used. Overall, the selection of track and accessory libraries and the ability to easily create 3D renderings and run live simulations is worth it, but I do find AnyRail a lot more pleasant and intuitive to work with overall.

Unfortunately, AnyRail is much more limited in terms of its O gauge libraries (i.e. Gargraves and Ross are supported but just barely) and it does not offer 3D renderings or live simulation. So, RR-Track it is!
