As some of you know I really like unusual or old craftsman building kits. Got a great one the other day. It's a Suncoast Model "O" Scale Icing Platform. I love opening an old box and just smell the lumber. Can't wait to get started. Before any of you write I know Suncoast is still making this kit but being old I got it for a song. The kit that is not me.  I have built other Suncoast kits and liked every one of them. This is one of those kits you just relax and take your time with. DonDSC_5367DSC_5368DSC_5370

What I know about scratchbuilding came from building Gloor Craft kits early on in the hobby. I was a complete novice to this. I would search them out at train shows. There was cutting, fitting, and bracing involved. They gave you everything to complete the kit with lengthy instructions. After a few of these. I found myself buying clapboard sheets and Grandt Line windows and plenty of strip wood for bracing and rolling a few of my own. I felt confident I could build specific structures for a given space.
