Hello Everyone

My short story. I have returned to model trains after a 3 decade absence when I became a dad last year. Some of fondest memories of childhood were spending hours with my grandfather and uncle who both had pretty decent sized layouts. When both men passed, their layouts were carefully broke down and packed away. As mentioned, when I became a dad, I felt responsible to passed this joy on to my son. I cautiously unpacked each crate and cleaned things up piece at a time. All of the old transformers looked to be degraded beyond repair (frayed wires, cracked housing, etc.). I purchased a Lionel CW-80 transformer from a local store and was able to clean up enough track to get a small oval layout running with some lighted accessories. My son was enthralled. Even as a little guy, he would watch the trains passionately.

Yesterday was his birthday and I promised him that he could be pick out a locomotive for our small but growing layout. He and I spent some great father-son time in the train store looking at the various options. He finally settled in on a diesel Union Pacific. It is MTH Railking SP-3. When placed on the track, the light goes on and sounds come out but the engine doesn't move. In doing some searches on the forum, I have seen that there are difficulties with MTH-Lionel compatibility. I explained to little man that daddy needs to do a little work on the train.

My question to the esteemed forum is whether this is a complete incompatibility requiring return of the MTH and purchase of a new locomotive or is there a fix possible. Please keep the technical terms on the basic side given my newbie status.

Thanks for the help from a struggling daddy

Doc Mike, the CW80 is a great transformer, but as Doc Davis said, it really isn't compatible with a LOT of the MTH engines. The MTH Z1000 will be the best transformer/controller to get. It will run both MTH and Lionel engines without any trouble. second the use of the CW80 for accessories-- it's a shame that it doesn't work well with MTH's engines.

Struggling daddy:

You didn't really screw up.  You definitely did the right thing by stimulating your son's interest in the hobby.  However, as others have said, I think you might be better off with keeping that CW80 as a power source for your accessories and consider buying another transformer (MTH Z1000 would be fine) for running the trains.

You noted that you have been dealing with a local train store.  GOOD!  Continue to do so!  If your train store has a layout or test track, it also wouldn't hurt to return the locomotive to the shop during that same shopping visit (for another transformer) to see if, in fact, it is operating as it should be.  My guess is that there's a compatibility problem with using the CW80 to operate the MTH locomotive, but I could be wrong about that.

Mike:  If you want it, I have a very nice, perfect working condition MTH Z1000 transformer I am willing to let go for a goofd price to you.  Where are you in Pa?  I am in McMurray (15 miles south of Pittsburgh).  Call me if you are interested.  I want you and your little guy to start having fun together.  724-941-8064

1st, informative topics, today, the trains and pictures also Halleluah!,

so much for worrying about people and concern about model numbers , thanks

I just went to the manual,  and I dont see a V on the list.  You think I might

get the same issue , with a MTH Blue Comet, (Madison) and also, a MTH , Penn Central

I can swap my trolley off of the ZW, (PW)  to the V,(PW)   now and leave an open terminal for the 2 MTH on the way,  I can also wait and see if it actually happens. I only have

1 SD-9 diesel, and kinda been excited about the MTH's headed to me ( next week)

Just learning, and my head kinda dropped down after reading the scenario.

thanks

DocxMike,

When placed on the track, the light goes on and sounds come out but the engine doesn't move.

Do engine sounds cut out when you press the direction button and is this a PS2 engine? If so, the problem just could be that the battery needs charging.

Let the engine sit on a track with power at around 16 volts for a couple of hours, or until when power is cut off sounds persist for 6-7 seconds. That might just do the trick.

Also, please read the manual that came with the engine.

Welcome back to the hobby!

If you install a 100uf 50v Non-Polarized capacitor across the A and U terminal it usually solves the problem with the CW80 in most cases. Anyone who wants one post here and I'll contact you to send me a prepaid self addressed envelope and I will be glad to send one to you to try out.

You don't need to keep it attached to the CW80 only on start-up and then you can remove it or just disconect one of the two leads.

DocMike,

Barry is giving good advise as usual, I would also recommend purchasing both the transformers these men have offered, both good transformer you are going to need

as your layout grows.   It is true however that your problem just might be the CW-80 transformer, the offer of the ZW transformer for $90.00 is just fantastic, and Charlie is probably doing it because of your boys interest, as usaul we have some incredible people here on the OGR.

Hello everyone

Thanks so much all of the wonderful help and advise. I got the sense from reading other posts that this community was very helpful and I was proved right.

Barry - the engine sounds do not cut off. I did try the charging option and that didn't help matters.

Charlie - yes it is amazing that little man and I share the same birthday. He is adopted and was something of a surprise arrival. About the best birthday gift that a man can ask for. Second best gift is model trains of course.

Bob - I will send you an email right after this posting. I am in PA but my football team wears green and silver not the black and gold (smile). I will take you up on the offer.

Thanks again to everyone. Once I am up and running I will post photos of the train and little guy

Doc Mike:

Had very similar issue early one -- the move away from the CW-80 to the Z-1000 was the fix, still use that Z-1000 brick with DCS on our larger layout. Money well spent, I guess is the point.

It gets more fun as the little fellow gets bigger, my son is just about to turn six and we've had a lot of happy times together playing with the trains.

Good Luck,

Jason

DocMike:

Sorry you and your son were not able to get the new engine going on your birthdays.  You may have already tried this but it has allowed me to run a MTH engine on numerous occasions.  One of the problems with the CW 80 is that it does not seem to actually reduce the voltage to zero with the handle but it does with the direction button.  Once the engine sounds come on, have you tried using the direction button to see if the engine will cycle as it should.  Not a permanent fix, but may get things going.

Good luck and happy railroading,

Don
