It is a DC only engine same as the steam engines that are DC only.  It is a small DC motor that goes into the frame.  I can't seem to navigate Lionel's product search to find a number for the motor.

If I wanted it, I would bid like it doesn't have a motor.  You would need to buy a motor and pinion gear.

The seller stated that it was a dummy. I would assume that it does not run.
The service material is on pages 1-36 and 1-37 of the base Modern Era Service manual, which is available on Lionel's customer service web site.

I would be surprised to learn you were able to locate parts for it,

By the way, those engines are generally DC only. No electronics. The sets came with a small DC power pack.

I have the exact engine right on my desk in front of me now. It weighs 8.9 oz with the original can motor. Back in the mid 1990s Lionel made some similar locos for separate sale, and they can run on AC power. New they were roughly $50. Should be able to swap shells with earlier Marines loco.

Not much at all under the shell.
