My engine light comes on but that's where it ends. Is there a sequence of tests or actions that will pinpoint the problem? I don't seem to be able to acquire a loco with my cab 1. Could it be I'm not getting a signal to the loco? How do I tell? Could it be a bad board in the engine? How canI tell? Should I get cab1out of the system and use Cab 2 and then add Cab1? Is ther any reason I need the TMCC Direct lock on to do the hookup? Right now theI have the Powerhouse 180W directly connected? I did notice that when I push buttons on the Cab 1 the lights on both Cab 1 and Cab2 flicker which leads me to believe a signal is being passed through. The bulk of both manuals for Cab 1 and 990 are for tweaking things after you have acquired the loco. Is there a tutorial anywhere that walks me through this step by step? Would this be easy peesy in a phone call with some kind sole telling me what to do? Blayne

Has the engine ever been on a layout with TMCC or Legacy? If not chances are the TMCC ID is 1. Try addressing it as ENG 1 using the CAB1 or CAB2 If you are unsure, then follow the programming instructions in the engine manual or turn off the track power and locate the PGM/RUN switch on the engine. Move it to PGM. Put the engine back on the track and power up. Push ENG a number between 2-98 (typically the first or last numbers in the road number) and then push SET. The horn should beep, headlight flashes. Turn off power and slide the switch back to RUN. Then return it to the track and power up.
Next select ENG the number assigned above, then blow the horn or press 3 for startup sequence. Move it out!
Okay, I tried to do this with a Cab 1 and a Cab 1L. I was told that you cannot have both systems connected together. It just wont work. I disconnected one of the bases and everything worked as it should have. I was trying to operate 2 TMCC cars at once without having to change the ID's.
I would venture to guess, if you disconnect one of the bases, everything will work as before. It will have to be either a CAB 1/L system or a CAB 2 system you use.
No you can only have 1 base connected to the track. That's the law.
A TMCC base can be connected serially to the 990 so that both a Cab1 or Legacy Cab2 can be used together. A Base 1L and Legacy Base should never be used together.

Look again Ed! You only connect ONE track signal wire to the layout. They clearly say No Signal Wire To Layout for the TMCC base.

I think Ed was just reiterrating via the manual what I was saying. I don't think he was implying both bases were connected to the track.

Thanks to MartyE and others. I think in the end even though my loco was new out of the box it needed to be reprogrammed to new number. Neighbors are out and about looking for who screamed when the horn blew. Now this is behind meet's on to getting the buss lines in place and the track cleaned. At present I only have one engine to run with the Cab 1 . and none to run with the Cab2. The number I used was 36. Can I load it into Cab 2 and then use either controller?
Thanks Marty, you are correct. Did not intend to convey the message that both can be connected to the track. Just wanted to help in case IP didn't have a manual. (Or, like me, only read it as a last resort... )
