Actually I think that's based on an early 1900s Asian doctors train control experiments on a rideable scaled train. I think it ran in Japan, Korea, maybe Hong Kong or Taiwann in a Zoo maybe. Also driven by chimps at one point?

  I stumbled on it in during art deco/streamiliner searches and on a Steampunk tangent. Multiple modern articles along with era articles. I'll see if personalized searches haven't buried it dead yet.

The issue of Psycology Today, August 1974 has an article on using brain waves to control devises.  The cover has a person with electrodes attached to their head and an electric train in the foreground.  Since this is pre internet, I have not been able to dig further.

Plenty of psychology today issues for sale on internet. Nothing readily available. Library closed due to the virus.

Wasn't there some movie back in the 80's that actually showed this?

There was a scientific educational movie in the 80's which showed an HO train moving when certain brain waves were detected by electrodes attached to the skull. The waves, which I think were alpha waves would start, speed up and stop it..
