I have used my ipad to run my DCS system for awhile. Suddenly I am having a terrible time connecting. I hook into the mth dcs network on my phone but my engines will show up inactive. If I try to add an engine I get nothing. Sometimes my iphone seems a bit better but only in the short term. Another problem is that on the off chance I get an engine to load I only have one load.I either get an inactive on another engine or it will not show up at all.

i get my system new at the fall 2019 show at York. Do the cordswear out?

Can anyone help?

thanks

Quay,

I feel your pain! You referenced cords wearing out. Are your devices tethered somehow? I have had the charger port on fail on 2 phone. I could only charge them on a pad.

As for Apple, I had an iPhone 7 which worked perfectly. Updated to an iPhone 14Pro to get the good camera. Immediately found it was horrible for DCS, so that's off the map here. I don't use at all.

I have a very old iPad that I  paid $80 bucks for, Worked perfectly but also got "goofy" on me, as you describe.. My new iPad ( a few months old) seems to be more problematic than the old one. But I don't think MTH is blameless either. I have had a terrible time getting brand new engines loaded, while at the same time seeing others just go "inactive" even when nearby on the same powered track. No rhyme or reason to it. I have moved engines to different sections, flipped them around end-for-end, removed every other engine that was on the tracks,,,,,no change. Then, for reasons I have yet to learn, they all start working again.

For this discussion, I'm assuming you use a the dedicated MTH wifi and not your house. My layout is all torn down now due to a house renovation, but that has been my experience right uo at August 1st. If you're anything like me, it will "just start working right" and you still won't know the how's and whys. Sorry I don't have a better answer!

Sunspots anyone???

Bob

Thanks for the laugh, Mr. RSJB!

"I", as you know, is next to the "U", which can make for some interesting mix-ups....as in "U should take the trash out" instead of "I will....:

My favorite, though, was an engineer at work that was gnawing on me in an email sent to about 20 people for something not getting done. He typeoed the "u" so his email read "I keep walking by those PIMPS....why are the not installed???". Of course, I had to reply to all 20 people.....and at his expense!

Cheers!

It is sometimes possible to return to a previous iOS operating  system.  I've never done it, so take this with a grain of salt.  It probably will mean erasing the current contents of the phone or tablet, so make sure you have anything you want backed up to iCloud or similar sites (contacts, for example).  Apple maintains some recent iOS systems on their website, and these are probably the only ones accessible to those of us without much in the way of software skills.  There are lots of discussions on the web of how to do this (see below). No warrantees about how good this information is.  If there is an Apple Store near you, that might be one source of information.   In the mean time, if you have a DCS remote, perhaps getting used to employing that instead of the app would be one alternative?  People will sell their first born for a DCS remote these days, so buying one may not be all that attractive an approach.

One other thing that comes to mind.  If you know what iOS system was working fine with the app, buy an inexpensive used iPhone or iPad with that system, download the app to that device and you might be golden, with any luck.

Best wishes for success.  Hopefully MTH will update their app to function smoothly with current operating systems in the near future.

Thanks. My TIU connects but that is a fr as it goes. I see train names all inactive and even though the TIU blue light blinks there is no connection. I have also noticed that if I do somehow get one engine to run, the lighting is all messed up. I know, for example, that on my Trainmaster that I have to turn off the cab lights, turn them on then off again at which point they come on. Frustrating to say the least,

Thanks again,

Quay

And people wonder why I want to stick with the physical remote.

The complexity of maintaining the software for all the different phone platforms and software versions isn't as simple as some may think it is.

Nothing beats a hand-held remote for running trains. I’d rather be watching the trains, rather than trying to keep track of what I’m doing on some screen.

When you say connects, it should be showing you the TIU id.  The app will continue to show you the list of active/inactive locomotives from the last time it connected.  This is why clicking on any of them does nothing.

If the TIU is not showing on the app, you can try my suggestion in this post.
