Anyone know why when using my iPad or iPhone then when I try to install an engine I get a time out message ??

I am using ps3 and ps2 engines.  I have all the latest updates on the app Wi-Fi unit and the TIU    Thanks for any help I can get.

SmoothDog,

I get that all the time, even 2-3 weeks ago with 4 brand new RS11s right out of their boxes. It "times out", says "no new engines", yada yada and I just keep going at it. None of my stuff is old, except for a couple  PS2 engines I have. I have reset the TIU, re-booted my 2 iPads, moved engines to different  tracks and still had to go at it several times before the iPad "found" an engine. I can not explain why, as you have inquired, but I can tell you even as it's frustrating, it has eventually has always worked. I assume for this discussion that you have the correct MTH TIU network connected and that your house or other wifi system is not. Keep trying! Maybe someone else will chime in here and we'll both learn a thing or two!!

The app is sometimes quirky but, as long as it doesn’t tell you that it can’t find the TIU, it should work.

It is odd that it can’t find 4 different engines but other existing engines work.  Here is list of things I would check:

  • Confirm that the section of track you using is working okay with one of your existing engines.
  • Remove all your engines or make sure that they are not powered.
  • If you new engines have it, check that the DCS/DCC switch is set to DCS.
  • Place one of the new engines on the track and see it can be found.

If this doesn’t work try using the DCS remote, if you have one.

I just downloaded iOS 17 beta and the app is still working.  Hopefully the new version of the app, if it isn’t vaporware, will address all of the quirks people are seeing.

Let us know how you make out.

I also have a question about MTH WiFi

I am using the Explorer and if I want to change engines on the track I have to shut down the system first or risk a short.  That means waiting for the Explorer to reboot and then reconnecting the tablet to the Explorer all over again and then finding the new engine even though the Explorer is capable of finding up to three engines when it is already started.

Do you have a way to cut the track power while changing engines without losing the connection other than having it on a siding with the power cut to that siding?

Thanks,

John

Enable the E-Stop button and use that to turn off track power. After you put your other engines on the track, just perform a read and the explorer will power up the track again.

Dan,

Your first comment sums it up nicely: quirky!

I've done all your thoughtful suggestions many times in the past and still had to try a few times before the engines all worked. One conundrums that I saw twice now was when "search new MTH engine" was activated, it found my (2) new Central Vermont engines with different road numbers at the same time under one address and started them both. Then they ran in different directions!!! I just re-did them one-at-a-time but don't think I should have had to do that.

This happened two weeks earlier with two brand new Maine Central MTH engines out of the box, again with different road numbers. When I say "new", I mean 2023. Not 10 or 15 year old NOS engines. The oldest thing in the room is the TIU and even that's a 2020 or 2021. New track. New iPad. Same "timeout" or similar messages. Quirky!!

H1000: great tip about the E-stop!
