Change coupler on LIONEL 6-82172 GP20 #2102 (14V2)

Hi-I need to change the rear coupler on my Lionel 6-82172 - broken wires. Changing out the coupler is easy, but it appears the shell needs to come off so I can remove old plug and install new plug. Any advice on removing the shell? Thanks.
