What do they do? (does it balance the signal?) thanks

That is how it gets serial data commands from the base.

How else is it going to get commands control track power? It does not have a radio receiver. This is one reason why the TPC is different than the Powermaster series- TPCs must have a wired serial data connection to a base.

I'm always curious about how the various components work together, so I did some searching.  It looks like the 6-14191 is discontinued and no longer readily available.  However, the 6-14192 is still available from some outlets.  Visually, the difference appears to be that 6-14191 has 2 wires (green & red) and 6-14192 has 3 wires (green, red, black).  So, I have a couple of questions...

1. Can the 6-14192 be used in this application by simply not connecting the black wire to the TPC?

2.  It looks like one could make their own cable using a DB9 connector.  Is this true?  If so, is there information available regarding which wire connects to which pin?

I also found a couple of old Lionel videos on Youtube that are related to the TPC which might be helpful.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?...1tryZ8oIE&t=994s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIXCTxf4VW4  There are several videos where Mike Reagan goes into a lot of detail regarding the use of Lionel's various components.

Also, on more recent setups (like base3 or even the previous Legacy base 990) an LCS SER2 module can be used as a serial data breakout point.
