It could be all sorts of problems and in reality you, or someone else is going to have to dismantle it and give it a good service.

We can all speculate what the problem is but I suspect it is several things culminating in its final demise.

The engine needs service, from your descriptions, I would say it is a combination of at least three of four things. I will start with the easiest to fix first, dirty and or oxidized/rusty track, the second would be dirty and pitted wheels. After these two are checked out it becomes more difficult to repair. The third thing to look at would be the amount of wear on the axles and or gunk and dirt build up on them. The fourth item to check is the reversing unit, there may be dirt and oxidation on the barrel and the fingers that transfer the electric poweremay be worn or broken.

All of these things can be fixed but the first two the track and the wheels are the easiest to fix. Look closely at the track and see if there is rust on it, and see if it is dirty.

If you see dirt you will have to remove that, try to wipe it with a paper towel and track cleaner.

If you see rust on the track you will need to purchase a Bright Boy which is like an eraser with gritty material in it, you will need to rub that on the track till it gets shinny.

If this doesn't help the next step will be to make sure the wheels are clean and free of rust and pitting, beyond these fixes it becomes more difficult and you may have to take it or send it for repair.

So... it's a diesel. Unfortunately, I find this model is "fussier" and more difficult to troubleshoot and work on than Gilbert steam engines.

If, after cleaning wheels and track you still have issues, I would suggest finding a reputable repair person.

Just my opinion.

I agree with everything that Rayin "S" has said.  Another alternative for cleaning the track and the wheels is a Scotch Brite pad.  You can get them at the dollar store or the grocery store.

Do the track first then  all the wheels where they touch the track.  The easiest way to clean all around the wheels is to clean what you can see and then run the locomotive a few inches on the track so you can clean more of the wheels, do this enough times until  the wheels are clean all around.

As Strummer said if that doesn't fix your problems, you will need to find a repair shop.  They can clean and service the locomotive to make it run well.
