Bill, what smaller connectors do you have?
Back on track, when looking at the big command control picture, whether a future upgrade is possible isn't a priority when it's apparent you are going to chose between one system over the other.
Go with the system that the other manufacturers chose to use when equipping their engines with CC. In that way you are assured of the best variety of locomotives to suit your needs, such as 031 runners. Unfortunately MTH ain't it.

Just out of curiosity, what size wires should be used for hooking up the upgrade kits and making tethers? 22 gauge wire?? I have seen some tethers that are 32 gauge robotic wire.
The MTH tethers have four #22 wires and the other six are either #26 or #28, pretty fine. The four are for power, ground, and motor. All the other function take less than an amp, and they use the smaller wires.
For motor and power, you need the #22, for the other functions, I'd probably go with no smaller than #28. #32 wire is REALLY fine wire, I can't imagine that for anything but LED's or perhaps the smoke motor. Also, #32 wire is very fragile and would be pretty likely to be problematic in a tether.
Bill,
For the steam engine upgrades I am doing, I will need 8 pin tethers, not 6.
Do you have any?

boxcar bill (modern toy trains) has 8 wire tethers
GunrunnerJohn, Who is a good source for the tethers???
I use a variety of tethers, for some I buy the MTH 10-pin tethers, they usually have plenty of wires for all the functions. I have a variety of connectors and tethers in my parts box, sometimes I can find something suitable there.
For small stuff, I use the MiniTronics MicroMini Connectors.
John, do you use the MTH Diesel Tethers? Do you have an item number for them?
That would be the BC-2100070 pictured there.
Looks like it would be a good tether, just need the male end for it.
Do you have an item number for a male and female tether that would for TMCC Upgrades? There website is not that friendly looking for parts.
AB-0000066 is the male that is normally in the locomotive, it's on a small PCB.
BC-2000000 is a universal tender harness with a straight plug.
BC-1000002 is a universal tender harness with an angle plug.
For connector parts, you can use these HIROSE parts for tethers as well.
DF11-10DP-2DSA - 10-pin male straight connector
DF11-10DS-2C - 10-Pin female housing
DF11-2428SC - CONN SOCKET 24-28AWG CRIMP TIN
Thanks John!
I think for future products, I will use the HIROSE Items for a sleeker look.
That's why I use them.
