I think it depends on what gives you your giggles in the hobby.

In 3-rail, looks there's an ample supply of used recent released equipment, as well as a decent flow of PW, and other such items. Needed staple items (track, etc) seems to be stable.

Not so in S scale, where they've suffered the loss, or slow down, of several suppliers.

In HO, there is a goodly amount of RTR (much of it highly detailed), etc, coming from mgf'ers and a butt loads of products of all types on the used market.

HOWEVER...

For the dwindling numbers of us in HO that like to modify, detail, and paint equipment, the desired and needed necessities are drying up.

* The former huge detail part maker Detail Associates is all but dead and many of their essential items are now made of unobtanium.

* A staple item for decades, Floquil paints have now been gone for years and that supply has dwindled to very little.

So, it's getting frustrating trying to find the needed detail parts and basics needed to "roll your own" engines and rolling stock.

Plus, HO has lost the following heavy hitters with the past few years, two with a notable impact are:

* Shinohara: Makers of fine switches in code 70 rail and code 100 rail along with crossings, flex track, etc. The originator/owner has retired. No one stepped forward to purchase the company.

* Just recently Micro Engineering has gone on the market to be sold. (The owner wants to retire.) This is a HUGE blow to layout construction. ME made excellent flex track, switches, track laying supplies (rail joiners, spikes, etc, etc, etc) in code 55, code 70, code 83, as well as S scale flex track, on and on.) Their production has already sagged significantly, and since the announcement of ME being for sale, there's been a run on their products (like Covid-induced runs on toilet paper, etc) and now the ME pipeline is almost empty.

So, in HO, now would be a very frustrating time to start construction of a layout that was based on using either of the above track products.

I thought I might chime in one more time and say, you cannot live Yesterday over, We do not know what tomorrow brings, We just have today, it’s a gift from above, We should rejoice and be happy. So, today is a great time to begin this wonderful and changing hobby. I chose to go Lionel’s Legacy Command Control, the Legacy and VisionLine engines are so much fun to run. If I were starting the hobby again today, I would do the same, Lionel is my preference. I buy, sell and trade with my friends here on the OGR Forum and my local friends. I have no issues buying on the secondary market and have found a lot of great deals, I do buy new also. The choice of products is unlimited today, ready made buildings, structures, great track of many choices is available, it’s up to ones imagination how much they want to spend on the hobby, it’s all fun. I suggest you find friends in your area and a nice hobby shop to, friends make this hobby a lot of fun. I’m in Clarksville Tennessee, my friend Dr.Jack Fisher lives in Nashville, my friend Farmerjohn lives nearby in Kentucky, and Cincinnati isn’t far off nor St. Louis Missouri. Visiting those with nice layouts is so much fun.
Happy Railroading Everyone
