My latest layout purchase. It is a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet (grass) 12' x 10'. I m going to lay it on the floor of my train room, place the tables that will support the layout upside down on it in their relative positions, then mark it and try to cut it out in one big piece. Then I'll have no gaps between the tables. FYI: My layout will run the perimeter of the room with 10' x 12' being the outside edge. I think it should work. Any comments or suggestions?

I did the indoor/outdoor carpet bit. Be aware that you will have a large expanse of very green! My garage setup is only 4x10, here's a shot before I started messing around with track arrangements.

Stick to the old adage: measure twice, cut once... and go slow... and there shouldn't be a problem. Attaching it to the top of the layout may be a bigger issue.
Forgive me if this is painfully obvious, but if the tables are upside down, the turf should be, too. This message brought to you by Anonymous Person Who Had To Piece Together The Sleeve She Cut Wrong Side Up...
That bright green turf gives you the tinplate layout look without the fragility of grass paper.
Tables as templates are good.
You'll go through utility knife blades quickly unless you put some heavy cardboard under the area to be cut.
Then you can use the table edge as a guide. Could be tough to get a 90° cut unless you use just the table tops.
Not like laying sod, greenside down, like Becky said.
Honestly, for that kind of carpet, it's easier to mark it well, then cut it with paramedic shears. The cheap ones will work, but they're so handy that it never hurts to have a good pair.
