I have an older Lionel TMCC 0-8-0 w/odyssey (6-28081) cataloged in 2002 that I am having issues with.  Whenever I place it on a track that is setup for TMCC, the engine will recognize the TMCC signal, the headlights come on, and will await a command from the CAB 1.  I can sometimes get the engine to start moving after addressing it, but not much faster than a walking pace.  Most of the time, I will not get any response at all.  I have tried readdressing the engine and also reset it to default factory settings following the manual.  None of this fixed the problem.

The next step was to unplug the TMCC base and try running the engine  in conventional mode.  After doing such, the engine did start running.  I observed the electronic E-unit not always functioning properly.  It sometimes would stay locked in the forward direction.

Please note I was able to operate two other TMCC locomotives on the club layout with no issues.

I found some time this evening to further examine this issue.

Following some info. I discovered from a recent thread, I turned track power on, and measured the voltage between the two outside pins on the odyssey board as I rotated the flywheel by hand.  This voltage should isolate between 0 and 5 volts D.C.  My test results showed the voltage fluctuating from 0 to 4.14 volts D.C.; might this be the issue?

I also examined flywheel magnet.  It appears the magnet is not loose.  Please see attached photo.

There probably is, but since I have spare boards, I normally just perch one on top and plug it in to see if that's the problem.

Marty mentioned the antenna, and that's one that causes all sorts of odd symptoms, including sluggish running.  That just bit me today, I forgot to plug one in when I buttoned up a locomotive.  Does it run better with the boiler shell off?
