I have the Lionel Barber Shop (14168) hooked up to 18v fixed voltage and I'm using a SC-2 to turn the action on/off. The building lights up nicely with 18v but the lights dim considerably with the action turned on. Any suggestions to keep the lights bright?

It sound like you may have some wires crossed. I would think the light and action would be on separate circuits.

If you have the manual look at page 4 for the correct way to connect to and SC2
Thanks for the replies. I've got the barber shop wired per the Lionel instructions and I have checked all the connections. The lights still dim when the action (revolving barber pole and moving barbers) is activated.

I run my conventionally and it does the same thing
Have you tried it on a table away from the layout.
I'm wondering if your power supply is sized right.
If it's marginal the light will dim because of the voltage
drop due to the power source is not big enough.
try it off the layout with a good size transformer and see what happens.
Or put a volt meter on the barber shop and see if the voltage drops
when it's turned on....
Using an ammeter, please tell us what the current draw is when only lit, and when in operation.
What gauge wiring are you using?
Can you post the wiring instruction page for those of us not familiar with that accessory?
I am using 20 gauge wire

I have wired four of these for different people using 18 gauge wire with relatively short runs and all four have experienced the same problem. I have not yet been brave enough to open it up to see if a different circuitry could be used for the lights and the action.
Good luck and happy railroading,
Don
Mine is "on" as long as the layout power is on. I did not realise that the action could be controled. Because of dim lighting, I added a overhead bulb to brighten the interior.
