I found a NOS MTH O Scale Premier SD40-2 Diesel Engine - With Proto-Sound 2.0 (20-2365-1) at a local hobby shop. Looks like the engine is from 2002. What issues can be expected with the engine since it has been sitting so long without use?

To be blunt, change the battery and be aware that it is a 5 volt board that has been highly prone to failure.
For the sake of price comparison, forum sponsor Trainz has one too. As John mentioned, best to avoid all PS2 5V due to the boards failing. When they fail, the only fix is a board replacement. That was an expensive fix when the boards were available. Now they're not available and who know when (if) they will be...
Thanks for info. The engine looks really nice, but I suspected there might be issues. I'm new to model RR'ing so I'm leaning on the expertise of you guys, hope you don't mind!

I have the BNSF version of this engine and so far it is a runner, but it does have issues with certain fastrack switches and derailing. I put a BCR in it which should keep it going.
