It’s Reefer Monday, Just had a thought about the reefers and this extreme heat. Would hobos have tried to catch a ride in a reefer? That said here is my reefer for this Monday. It’s an Alexander Graham Bell reefer from the Lionel inventor series. When it was made in 1989 I was about midway in my career in the Bell system. So of course I bought one; and then I bought a few other inventor reefers before I realized I really didn’t like them.  Why an inventor on a reefer? It’s not like they had a casket in there. A few years ago a friend of 53 years; another Telephone guy, gave the reefer to me that is mounted on a display board. So here it is.

From 1934-1936 Marx, after taking over Girard Model Works (makers of "Joy Line" trains) adopted their rolling stock for early production of what became known as the 6" cars.  The early ones like this had a very short wheelbase and a silver lithographed frame.  They also continued to use the Joy Line couplers (these are on this car but unfortunately my picture does not show them).  From 1936 on, Girard Model works had become Marx's Girard Manufacturing Company and the production of the 6" cars continued however some changes were made.  The wheel base was extended and the lithographing of the frame stopped.  Marx also changed the couplers to a more traditional tab/slot coupler that was more rugged and easier to manufacture.

So from about 1934-36 Here is the early 6" Marx C&S Reefer.

Here are some R50b reefers by MTH.   They are actually modeled after the Pennsy R50b, however in our hobby one size seems to fit all or in this case one design seems to fit all ... not a complaint just an observation ... I think these models look terrific!   If I had not read that info regarding the prototype design of this MTH model, I would have never known the difference ... lol!  At any rate I love running these express reefers as part of an express mail train or head cars on a passenger train.   Notice the different car number 305 & 307 on the REA reefers.

The French National Railways (SNCF) nationalized the refrigerator car business under a single carrier that operated under the name STEF (Sorry I can't find the English translation).  As such they operated a huge fleet of refrigerator cars all over Europe.  While privatized today the company still operates in the area of "cold" logistics with all sorts of trucks and facilities.

This is the French Hornby STEF refrigerator car from the 1960's.  All lithographed in tinplate, with a sliding door.

Happy July everyone!  Looking forward to the 4th.

Happy Reefer Monday everyone...here is one available from 1940-1949 and then this  basic car re-emerged after 1949 for a short period 1954-1956, the date on this car is "New 1-53" so it appears to be from this later vintage.    A sliding door car, this represents sort of the "upper end" of the Marx 6" line that usually just had lithographed doors.

So here is the Marx #10978 Fruit Grower's Express reefer from 1953:

Interesting, sliding door with lithographed reefer doors.

It’s Reefer Monday! Let’s see your Reefers!

As always, please follow forum rules when making your post. Last week on Boxcar Sunday I wrote about and posted WIF & SS boxcars.

I noted that it was mentioned that WIF SS also listed reefers; but I couldn’t find any examples. During the week I was looking over PDT’s specials and I came across WIF SS reefers. Here are two different road #S.

To be completely honest, I don't know the difference between a reefer and a box car.  Maybe this qualifies here but I'm only guessing.

Walt that is a Reefer (refrigerator). Early ones had to be Iced. Will have hatches on the roof. The hinged doors are a giveaway as opposed to sliding doors on a boxcar. Many reefers indicate “insulated”.

Cool car! pun intended

As I continue to add cars to my Friendship Train, I have learned that some of the 800+/- cars were reefers.  I took a photo of a model of one of these reefers at a PRRT&H conference.  It accurately matched the real car.

I have no idea what road the real car came from, but I found this Weaver reefer that I will use to make mine.  The signs and some black paint will get my close.

OK I am going to risk Bob's wrath here because @Andy Hummell posted two pictures of reefers from the Altoona Brewing Company and advertising "Curve" premium beer.  I picked up this KLINE covered hopper just for fun because I don't have any "beer" cars in my collection (why? don't know)...and I have been looking for where I might post them.  No luck on that score but seeing Andy's post today, I just thought that for fun I might follow on to his reefers.  Bob, I apologize for drifting out of the main theme of the post and ask your forgiveness.
