I have two Ives motors and both have the same issue, they need a push to start but once running they are fine. I replaced brushes on both and that didn't help. Any suggestions? Lenny J

I hate to say this but--did you grease the gears and oil the axles and the armature shaft?? Do the gears mesh correctly ?? Did you clean the commutator ?? Is the reverse mechanism in good repair-if you have one?

Another possibly is an open winding in the armature.

Yes Jim everything was properly lubed and oiled and gears mesh properly. Ron, you may be correct I was hoping for anything else since Ives armatures are not readily available
Have the armature rewound/rebuilt. I 've done it with many Ives motors.
There are several repair guys who will do the work.
if the holes that the armature shafts fit into are worn it can cause the problem you are having. i corrected a Lionel 154 with the same problem by replacing the brushplate assemble.
Jim
there was a tip in Dr Tinker's column IIRC once, where someone made a bushing out of a brake lining rivet for the brush plate.
I repaired an Ives motor that had been rewound, but would barely run.. The windings were not connected to the correct commutator segment. That's probably not the OP's problem, but there was one more problem. The commutator had shifted/rotated on the its axle and was not "clocked" properly relative to the armature windings.
If you have any Ives motor that works properly, use that as a guide and clock the commutator properly, then set it with Loctite.
Thanks for all the help will try the suggestions and see what happens
If all else fails let me know. I have a Ives armature that tests perfect. If you can post a picture of the frame with the armature frame. I've been saving this thing for several decades. Glad I found someone that needs it.
Hi Stew 1957, I'll try to post photos later this week. Thank you. Lenny J
