thanks sunrise, but there's a lot of forum members who know a LOT more about ives than i do... FWIW, my experience, limited though it be, is that Ives couplers are all the same height and there is NOT an issue comparable to Lionel's 200/500 height differences.  Also, I would say this extends as well to any Ives reproductions I have come across, Richart, Varney, MTH, etc.

JoeG, your question raises an interesting point.  It made me wonder: although Ives equipment is all interchangeable in terms of coupler height, did Ives ever offer a freight set headed by the 3243?  I don't have all the Ives catalogs, but the several that I do have all show the 3243 only on passenger sets.  The freight sets are usually made up with the 1134 steamer, sometimes with the smaller 3241 or 3242.

Do any of the serious Ives experts on the forum know whether Ives offered the 3243 heading a freight set in any catalog?

Steve, could you post a direct link to the 'set info'?  I can't seem to find it on the ITS website.  Thanks.

At York this spring, I got a 3243 white set, this one is an original set, 'restored' (repainted) by John Davanzo in the late 1960's before he started Pride Lines.  Probably not originally white, but it is now!  It's a fun set for me to have, given my interests in both Ives and MESG.

Thanks Steve.  The Ives Society site has so much information on it, but I have trouble with it.  I think it has to do with my browser.

So help me out here.  Under "Locomotive No. 3243/3243R", it lists five sets with the 187-189 large passenger cars; two sets with the 180-182 passenger cars with the 6-wheel trucks; and two sets with the 241-243 Flyer-bodied passenger cars.

What am I missing?  Where are the freight sets with the 3243?

My mistake, guess I was looking at the 3242. Here's the 3243, all passenger types

Good topic, I love it when people discuss IVES!

   First, the coupler question...

For the most part, a 3243 will mate with most cars. The exception to this is the late "transition" era rolling stock.

In 1928 we all know the story, IVES used AF bodied freights, and the snake track pull coupler was introduced. The 1928 freights use high trucks, but after 28' you can run into problems. The 3243 is a tall loco, and will lift the front wheel set of a late car off the track. In 29-30 the freights used the low 4 wheel truck from the 184 series passenger cars. This is not true for the remaining "all IVES" bodied cars.

The 1928 and newer passenger cars also use low trucks. So they will pose an issue occasionally. The six wheel truck is not as low as the late 4 wheel job.

As far as a 3243 freight set goes. It never "officially" existed. However, we have found a box that once contained a 3243 with 3 freight cars. It is a "cloud" box which would put it 1921-24.
