Did you back up and take a little slack, just like the real ones have to do?

I'll bet Hot Water has the answer. You can try to open it all day long but if the knuckle is jammed against the following car's coupler, it can't open. Tighten the slack and try again.
Looks like Hot Water and SJC have the answer. Most, if not all my MTH engines, steam or diesel, will uncouple without backing up or on the fly, no matter what length the train. All of my Lionel engines need to back up first and take a little slack to uncouple, unless it's just a car or 2 in tow. I guess that makes Lionel's design more prototypical.
