So these are all delightfully silly. But serious question... What's with the GG1 love in general? Do people like it because "it's so ugly it's cute" kind of thing? Like Pugs? Or Amy Schumer?

Seriously, the thing is hideous. It looks like a confused hair dryer with an inferiority complex and a pantograph.

I think you need a blue and yellow warbonnet.

Mine has history, kinda like that old bike, like, who"s your best friend, spouse or dog? "Lock them both in the trunk for an hour and see which one is happy to see you when you open the trunk".

She's a beauty, speaks to me, heavy as **** and "No Honey, That dress does NOT make you look FAT, and those Pantographs, yea, sweet." imho

Jeff... Jeff... Jeff... a BL2 is “so ugly it’s cute”, an Amtrak toasters is “so ugly it’s cute”. GG-1’s are stylish, sleek, streamlined engines which look fast while standing still. They are iconic representations of their era. Now the plain black PC version was kinda ugly... and that Bicentennial version was DEFINITELY ugly. The various versions shown in this thread (or suggested) are desecration, pure and simple

We Pennsy fans have a special fondness for it, and being an ex-New Yorker can add that we have ridden behind one many times. Add to that it's a Lionel icon and one of the smoothest runners they ever made, and you have a better idea of the love. I have a carefully restored 5 striper and it looks great pulling the postwar aluminum passenger cars- the sizes are right- a little compression all around. Of course the Pennsy never ran vistadomes, but hey, they are toys!!

@baltimoretrainworks I just had a great idea!

A GG1 in the black and yellow scheme of "The 48 Club." You already have stylish passenger cars, now you need an engine to pull them. I would think that this version needs to be a semi-scale engine.

As an aside, are you still accepting members into  the Brotherhood Of The Crappy Basement Layout? I have exposed pipes, exposed wires, unfinished walls and a concrete slab for a floor.

Doctor Who, 'Spyfall, Part 1': A very, very welcome return

Even tho I think the proper locomotive to pull that set of passenger cars is the iconic NYC Dreyfuss Hudson...

As to the CBL it's an open membership to anyone who has a layout in an unfinished part of the house be it garage, basement or attic or an unfinished out building like a shed or barn, in fact if it meets those criteria you're already a member! The 48 Club is more that we are aware of the limitations of that size and choose to model in it despite them.

Since there's so much hate regarding these, how about a Batman version?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you The Arkham Knight...

I swear to God if any of these show up on the market down the road I will loose it.

I know I need to do a Superman one now and a Hulk and a Green Lantern and a and a and a...

Thank goodness all my viewings of the one and only PENNSY GG1's in the Sunnyside Yard in Queens are firmly etched in my memory! There is, and always will be, the CLASSIC PRR GG1's! Anything else is HERESY! (Cue cat hiss) LOL!

Most of my viewings of the GG1s in person were in the small engine yard just north of South Amboy.  In my childhood they came in four flavors.

  • Tuscan Red 5 Stripe 4877
  • All black with PC era numbers and a nearly microscopic NJDOT stencil on one end.
  • DGLE with the single yellow stripe with no herald and NJDTO stenciled under one of the numbers.
  • Finally as E60CHs (posers!)

I am old enough to have also witnessed a full PC GG1 at Newark Penn and one in black stenciled for Amtrak after official retirement at 30th St, Philadelphia in the yard.

I can still have fun with my favorite locomotive though!  T

Lionel does have the sound and control system to put in a GG1 for this, if they were so inclined. I remember this train

from the Legacystation youtube channel. Just paint it black, put the Batman wings decal on either side of the Pennsy keystone

and it's good to go!

Exactly.  If Batman is the PRR, those characters belong on NYC locomotives!

The date Batman first appeared was 1939 (the locomotives number) which fits in nicely with the GG1s build dates of 1934 – 1943. I have a number of Williams GG1s and a couple blank shells I found on Ebay a few years ago, might try making the Arkham Knight and one of the Santa Fe designs.
