Here's a recent upgrade of the K-Line Mikado.

It got ERR Cruise Control, a fan driven MTH smoke unit, and my Super-Chuffer board.  It also received a flickering firebox upgrade.  Turn off the smoke detectors, because this will surely set them off!  After seeing this run, I added a hi-low switch to the smoke unit.  Obviously, this is on the high setting, I use a string of diodes to damp down the heat to the smoke element on the low setting.  It's not shabby at low, but clearly more impressive running full bore.

Please ignore the PRR passenger cars, I didn't have a set of NYC cars handy.

Ignore the interloper on the inside track, he was just trying to steal my thunder!  As is fitting, he had a derailment in the attempt and lost power.

GRJ,

You're killing me bro!  I literally just bought one of these Friday from a great forum member.  Ran it for the first time today and thought, 'it needs a fan smoke unit and one of GRJ's boards."  I log in to this forum and see this post!

My favorite part of your video is seeing the smoke behind the mountain before the loco is ever visible!  Now that's a smoker!

Thanks guys.   It is certainly a smokin' fool!

Gary, the smoke unit I used is a standard MTH PS/2 type with the short posts.  The motor is in the rear under the fan chamber.  I removed the puffer and made a small aluminum mounting plate.  I used a couple of shims to get the height proper and it mates perfectly with the boiler stack.

It's a tight fit with the Super-Chuffer board, I ended up sticking it up over the motor encased in heat-shrink.  The boiler shell is too narrow near the smoke unit to put it there, and the top was the only available location.

The only downside of all the smoke is you have to refill it pretty often.  The loop around that basement is about 450 feet of track, it's one giant folded dogbone.  About two trips around and it's time for more fluid.  Running on low, it made it around four times before noticeable drop-off in smoke was evident.

The trick with these upgrades is the MTH smoke unit, those things just POUR out the smoke.

Keith, if you upgrade your Mikado, I'd use the MTH smoke unit.  I am running that one on a single resistor.  Of course, it's mandatory to have the Super-Chuffer as well.
