Can any tel me more about this unit. Is it a good runner or is it a model that you run away from? Also would a MTH PS 3 board fit into it?

The original K-Line shays were very good and reliable runners. Not so the Lionel remake which had gearing problems. You need to keep the engines drivetrain lubricated.
They are ment to run slow and that is the best way to run them. Also the sound is a really an Atlantic Sound chip. You can also change the chuff rate. The smoke OK but they do not puff.
If you plan to run on 031 make sure the one you get has the accessory draw bar.
Not a whole lot of space inside so I’m not sure if MTH board would fit. Maybe someone else could chime in.
Didn't realize that an accessory drawbar was available. I have found the limiting factor is the coupler swing. Mine will derail the first car behind it on any curve less than 054. I agree they run well. Continuous smoke is actually prototypical for anything above about 3 mph. Between the three cylinders and gear reduction steam is emitted about two dozen times per wheel revolution.

Thank you. Can you gentlemen tell me more about the accessory bar, K line number would also be helpful.
The accessory draw bar was included with the engine. There is no separate part number. When Lionel remade the engine they changed the design and did not include it.

Only K-Line provided it with the engine. Lionel never did. It was never available for separate sale. It basically extended the drawbar allowing the engine to operate on tighter curves.
The K-Line was a beautiful rugged model. I am not sure what scale it was made to, but it towered above a scale box car - most geared locomotives were rather small, even if standard gauge.
Thanks for the info, now I would like get one for my collection.
A quick follow up question what where the correct flat cars for this engine? Does anyone have the K Line model number for them?
