Ok, so I took the fan and motor out of the new lionel and put into the kline unit.  Works fine.  The problem was that the owner put too much fluid in the unit and soaked the motor to death.  I thought the board was toast so I ordered an new one.  Here's some pics showing the difference betwen the two.  The lionel one has a smaller hole in the front, but the kline version has a metal pan under the two stacks, that allow the fluid to drip into the larger hole.  Very odd, almost like they just used what they had instead of designing the unit to actually sit under the stacks.  I don't think the lionel version can be used because of this.  Maybe this will help someone in the future if they run into the same problem.

Thanks GRJ !

Sounds typical.  The parts I replace most often is the motor and the wick.  Occasionally, I have to replace the resistor.

Gaskets are problematic for many smoke units as they're not available.  I have made my own from gasket material for ones that aren't available, but it would be nice if the manufacturer's actually had replacements.  The only ones I can get regularly are the full sized MTH smoke units.  For most Lionel and the MTH small smoke units, forgetaboutit!
