I got a used k-line ( not a K-line by Lionel ) remote log car for my birthday and I can not get the car to work. It came with no box or instrutions so I have a couple of questions to ask.
1. Do you need to have a special track or should it dump anywhere on the layout using the K-Line remote?
2. If I do need a specail track what type of track do I need?
3. What is the little red button for on the bottom of the car underneath the front trucks?
All of the wires are attached and in good shape. I put fresh batties in the remote and it comes on like nothing is wrong. The car and remote looks like it has very little run time
If you can help me out I would be greatful.
Thanks,
David

K-line operatng cars work both with the remote and any magnetic uncoupler track. Position the car so the magnet is in the middle and energize the magnet while there is power to the track.
The red switch is to reset the dump mechanism to the down position. The can motors on these cars sometimes jam so you might try to get the motor to turn a bit if it is not dumping.

I am not familure with that car but they generally have a reset button under the car someware. That might be that red button you mentioned. Push the button while the car is on the track with power applied. If it has stopped in mid cycle it will not run until it is reset.

There should be a series of small switches underneath the car. These set the address. A group of three labeled A,B,C and a group of eight labeled 1 - 8. Turn one and only one in each group on, all the rest should be off. This sets the address. On the remote you have three buttons A,B,C and the number buttons. Push the letter button and then the number button. For address B,2 push the B button and then the 2 button. The Reset button on the control resets the control not the car.

If you look under the car you should see a small plastic cover or a plastic drop down box. This is the reed switch. Place this over the center electro-magnet in and uncoupling track to operate the car with the track.

I have a K-Line log dumper that worked ok for several dozen dumps using the K-Line remote. Then it stopped dumping. The LHS where I bought it also had a K-Line coal dumper that failed out of the box.
I have since purchased two K-Line by Lionel dumpers that are working perfectly after several years using my original K-Line remote. Lionel made several upgrades to the exterior of these items and I assume also upgraded the electronics.

I had one stop on me. As I recall there is a cycle switch (sort of a limit switch) that must be closed in order for the car to start a cycle. Some times the car will drift off this switch and must be reset, that is waht the reset button is for. If it works with the reset switch then it should work otherwise.

Don't know about the remote not working. Best I can suggest is to try new batteries.

I got it to work with the red reset button but not with the remote. I can smell electrical smell and noticed a little smoke from the bottom ( not all the time ) just one time. Maybe a wire has shorted and I guess the next thing to do is taking it apart and looking at it,
Next question how do I take the motor compartment apart?
Thanks,
David

Yup, they are great when they work. I think I have 7 of them and about 4 work. There was also a milk car, barrel car, and boxes or something, Tool and Die ???.

I converted one using a Mini-Commander and it turned into a royal science project, and I went overboard putting LEDS. You had to operate it with a strange combo because of the way the limit switch worked, maybe once you get it rolling, you let the limit switch take care of turning off the motor. I got 4 MC for $100 on some Father's Day sale long ago.

Lionel should spin a new version, it would so rock with TMCC, then get of that remote.

Long ago Rod March figured out something with the cars, but I forgot what it was, I have it saved on my home computer.
