I'm sure lots of people will have different opinions but personally the simple one trick ponies have alot to offer. An operating gateman shack and a whistle building are always crowd pleasers. Possible the rotating beacon light or that airport tower that the planes buzz around ( although that last one may be too much.) Also a bump and go type trolley on a small track where you hit the button and it goes for something like 20 or 30 seconds on a relay timer is good stuff too.
Just my opinion. Good Luck
0-gauge crossing gates, the big ones, not the "scale size" ones. Kids love to operate them. (@ least mine did). another good one would be the re-issue 164 log loader, great fun!
I second the bump and go trolley, kids love to put their hand out and let the bumper hit and reverse.
How about an operating car? Such as a barrel, log or coal car. My 3 yr old grandson loves to push the button for the barrel car.
Kids young and old always seem to enjoy the dump cars.

I third the Bump - n - Go trolley. If you connect a pushbutton to the isolated center rail of one end of the track, the kids can push the button to send the trolley on an out-and-back run.

The biggest hit on my layout with young kids was the operating icing station. When I had a layout under the tree and my son was young- 3 yrs - he would lay on his belly 30 min at a time playing with that accessory. The ice cars are pretty much unbreakable and stood up to shaking in order to remove the ice blocks and he would push it by hand to the right spot and then press the button to activate the loader.
Young kids like to touch and I feel this accessory held up well to young kids playing with it.

What does kid friendly mean?
When I was setting up layouts for kids to run at our train show, the milk car was extremely popular.
But does one have to worry about children swallowing a milk can?
(It never happened with my kids, or those layouts)
My grandkids, all 6 and under, can operate my magnetic Gantry crane if I'm there to supervise and get them started. I guide them for a while and then after they get used to how it works they can operate it by themselves.

how about a switch that powers a stub siding with one of the self-powered cop/ hobo cars (3444 or 9307)...
just a suggestion... in no way a gratuitous plug for one i have posted in the "For Sale" section.
We have MTH animated buildings on the club layout and the kids seem to enjoy them. The two big hits are the McDonalds and the Fire Station.
The milk cars as well as the ice station aer the favorite on my layout.
