Much Appreciated!
Thanks for the info. I just checked all of my extinguishers. EVERY ONE is in the recall. I'm going to get right on this issue.

Mine is from 1989 I don't think it's part of the recall so I'm good.Nick

The recall goes as far back as '73
Yeah Rockstars; I'd urge you to follow the link in the OP; enter your model number, date code and serial number. When you hit submit it tells you whether your extinguishers are covered. No need to guess.
Better safe than sorry!

I have 2 kidde and both are on the recall list. Thanks for the link.
Thanks for posting!
I had a 2 pack I bought a couple years ago and the model I had was on the list.
It is sort of mind boggling that such a defect could go back so far to include models from 44 years ago and only be found now though.

Maybe it takes that long to accumulate enough data indicating an unacceptable failure rate. Have owned a number of fire extinguishers in my lifetime but never actually had need to use one.
Also, the recall appears to apply to disposable models with plastic handles, for which reliable incident data may have been difficult to acquire (oops, fire extinguisher did not work, must be old or not used correctly - no need to tell anyone).
Dodged the recall myself by stocking rechargeable Kidde Pro models on each floor, in the garage and in the truck. May want to consider spending a few extra bucks to replace disposables; just lucked out myself thinking the disposable models were too small to cover all possibilities and the additional cost negligible compared to the life or property that otherwise might be at risk.
I called them yesterday after being told about it by a friend. Hold time for the 800 number was under five minutes. I have two of them on the list.
Thanks for sharing.
All three of mine are on the list. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the updated link with request form link, my old link from yesterday's news did not have the form link.
Two of my three Kidde extinguisher were on the recall list.
Most recalls only get 5 to 10 % returns, this one may get many more than that.
People who buy extinguishers are more safety and recall aware than most.
Thanks for info, one of mine were part of recall. Kidde is sending a replace with no hassle!! Lenny J
Thanks! One of mine is part of the recall.
Just checked mine, but its a First Alert brand and not on recall.
Thanks for the heads up though.
Good post, I checked mine and the one was subject to the recall and the pressure was starting to drop into the red zone. Got my replacement on the way.
Claim submitted 6 November and received replacement today (19 December). Would not have known about the recall except for OGR. Thank you LEHIGH74.
One Kidde received today, still waiting for 2nd one.
Claim was made on Nov 4 for both Extinguishers.
I was afraid my claim was lost in the rush.
Anybody able to get free pickup return via Fedex without calling 800 number ?
Does it matter what returned unit go into return box first ?
I think I will wait for second Kidde Box and return these both at the same time.
There was no web link offered in cover letter, just to call and talk to operator at Fedex.
Thanks for the heads up, mine were on the list as well. Likely would not have known unless I saw it here!

Think you have to call. I learned they would not accept them at a Fed Ex drop off location (at least not the one in the local strip mall near me, not sure about an actual Fed Ex Hub or processing plant). The black diamond on the box to indicate a hazardous shipment is apparently key (I think they only send them via ground due to the compressed chemicals in the extinguishers).
Can't offer direct experience help on the details of it mattering which one goes in which box, as mine were identical from a 2 pack. Were the units you sent in different in some major way (size, etc?). Even though mine started life as a 2 pack, they sent me 2 single boxes with similar sized units, so I sent them back in the separate boxes.
I would suspect as long as you send in one extinguisher for each you received a replacement for, you should be OK. Following the instructions about re-using all the packaging, of course - re: black diamond marking referenced above. Assuming you don't waste a big box on a smaller extinguisher (which would make it impossible to later put a big extinguisher in the smaller box you haven't received yet), I would not suspect they care.
I will add that regarding the comment of several people not knowing unless it was posted here, I will give credit to the store I purchased these from, as I received a letter from them as well. I am not a regularly renewing member, but every few years I may take advantage of a 2 month free trial membership offered by BJ's. I haven't had one of these trial memberships in probably 2-3 years now, and they still sent me a letter regarding my purchase to let me know of the recall.

I already received both of mine, including a replacement for one made in 1995. I dropped off the old ones at the FedEx office with no issues.
I submitted a claim on one that was recalled in 2009 after seeing the threads on the recall, they replaced that one as well.

Be aware that the Kidde extinguishers were sold under MANY different brand names. While your particular extinguisher may not be included, I believe that a lot of the recalled models were sold under the First Alert brand. Check the recall website. If you have a consumer model with a plastic handle and nozzle, regardless of brand name, there's are real good chance that it is affected by the recall.
