L-Girder construction with 1/2 thick plywood deck. Check out a previous Forum posting titled,"What are the pros and cons of L-Girder benchwork". I chose the L-Girder construction because of the flexibly in locating L-girders to support the plywood deck and bottom mounted Tortouse switch motor locations.
I built my 28' X 15' using L girder with 3/4" plywood on top. I got a better deal on the 3/4 plywood then I could with anything from the big box stores. My L girders are also 3/4" X 2 1/2" plywood strips and I can stand on it with no problem.
So here is a slightly off topic question. Why are so many O scale layouts built flat on plywood instead of using risers to allow the terrain to fall below track level like HO and N scale?
Less work...
I added layers of foam to raise my track to a higher elevation and to allow me to carve into the foam for creeks, rivers and ponds.
