Hi are late model 726 and 736 motors interchangeable? I know the have some external appearances with the brush plate but are they interchangeable?

From my experience, yes they are interchangable. When you look at the motor casting of the slanted turbine motors, they all look identical. I have even switched brush plates on a 681 motor, with the brushplate that is used on the 2020/671, with the tubed brush plate, and it works perfectly. If you look at most of the motors on ebay, for the turbines, etc., they are typically listed as 671/681/2020 in the description of what is being sold.
Departing from the thread title, forumites should be aware that the brush plates on LIonel side plate transverse motors are not necessarily interchangeable although they look the same and will fit.

The 671 motors from 1947-49 probably have loose ball bearings as opposed to having a ball bearing race, as the 681 motors do. The bearings are different too.
But the motors should work interchangeably.
