Not sure why the common EL transition scheme was never offered by MTH over the years after numerous requests. It’s only been around since the 1960’s, LOL! It took Steve@ Mr. Muffins Trains along with myself and several others to launch a run for it. Thanks Mr. Muffin for getting this done!

The diesel was inspected for Quality defects and Passed my QC inspection. The crew sounds are very good as well. MTH even got the two different fonts correct as this came over from the Lackawanna Railroad. Its time was the first to be Radio Equipped!

It is also amazing that I didn’t have to wait two years after ordering it! The new MTH crew produced it in a timely manner as committed. I added my cab figures and weathering touches to it. When the big 3 offered dummy units over the years, I bought them hoping MTH would produce power units down the road to go with them. It’s been a long road, LOL! I also have 3 EL GP-35 dummies from Lionel and Atlas and have pre-ordered the MTH power unit. Another overlooked EL item by the old MTH.

Now they need to concentrate on the SCL power, RK plated passenger cars. Also a FAMILY LINES PS-1 50’ WAFFLE with the white logo scheme, never offered in the past.

Excellent, SIRT! I love your light detailing. Was it difficult to place the figures in the cab? Any tips on removing the shells?  I have the LIRR RS3 and plan on  weathering it and installing crew figures as well. I bought a few artista seated cab figures for this project. Also, have you had any luck removing MTH decaling? I need to remove some lettering under the cab window so I can place appropriate “M” decals. I may just paint over, since the yellow is pretty universal and I’m going to weather it anyway.

7 screws removes the shell. The 8th remains on the speaker housing. Pull out irons on cab. Add masking tape to the cab shell for protection from the irons. I scratched one once.

I asked Andy awhile back at MTH why no cab figures. Couldn’t fit them in that narrow space.

I cut off the legs of cheap figures. Using a bench grinder, I add a flat spot so the figure will glue to the inside area after installing the wall. Using an alligator clip, paint the figure and Dullcote. Cut a sheet of photo paper to fit and paint grey or green for the interior. You can avoid paint and print out the color as well. Apply Elmer’s glue and slide up into place. Easier than removing the cab. Use long thin needle noise pliers to install figure with glue.

Note: Artista are too nice to use for this and wont fit either.

Donations accepted, LOL!

Thanks Steve! Can’t wait to give it a try.  Appreciate the tape pro tip. Bummer on the artista figures not fitting. I’ll have to get some other cheap ones.

Well Steve, I was on the fence until your post this morning convinced me.  While I really didn’t ‘need’ a new engine, my EL unit is now confirmed and on the way!   I attended the U of Scranton for a couple of years in the early 70s.  The University’s parking lot and some buildings were directly adjacent to the EL tracks and just up from their yard, much of which is now Steamtown.  I regret that I didn’t take any rail-fanning photos as the tracks were always busy, but alas, I was at the age when I was more interested in tail-fanning if you get my drift!  I’m looking forward to receiving the engine to join my EL U-boats and Trainmaster.
