With the digital remote on the SG RTR sets, does the signal go directly from the digital remote to the train so you can use any track and transformer with no other components required?

No, the signal goes to the lock-on and through the track to the engine, so you have to use the track supplied with the set.

Not quite true, John. You can use any track; just run two wires from the track to the receiver rather than use a lockon.

So if I understand correctly, the receiver is in the lockon? I would need to run the wires from the lockon to the track if not using the supplied lockon and the track that came with the set?

I want to be clear. Is this the device you're referring to:
As per John's response, the early receivers plugged directly into a section of MTH proprietary track...there were no wire-nuts, therefore no adaptibility to tubular or other track.

If you have what Allan has pictured, you can use the remote with any track system. I hooked mine up to Lionel fast track with no problems.
