What cable is required between the Legacy 990 DB9 connector on the back of the base and a PC to write and/or backup onto the black re-writable modules using the software app??  If the PC end of the cable is serial, I'm assuming I can insert a serial to USB converter for all newer PC's without a serial port?

Is there a Lionel# for this cable? Is there something special about it?

Nothing special.  A standard 9 pin serial cable works fine.  Yes a USB to serial adapter works too.

Thanks, Marty- I suspected as much, but didn't want to take a chance of blowing out the base in case Lionel had some special wiring. I just managed to get a Legacy 990 locally for a REASONABLE price, which is rarer than any precious metals right now, as we all know.  I even managed to purchase two of the black re writable modules for it.
