I have one of the original Legacy control systems and have been plagued with a problem for about a year now. I do not use the system very often but I have managed to get by substituting an alternative method for charging the batteries in the hand held transmitter.

When placing the transmitter back in the base cradel for recharging, the unit does not recharge regardless of how long the system is on and the length of time I leave the hand held transmitter in the cradel.

If I take the batteries out of the transmitter and re-charge them in my separate charger (Radio Shack charger), the batteries will take a full charge and when inatalled into the transmitter will work as it is suppose too. When the batteries have used up their charge and I try returning the transmitter to the base for charging, the batteries will not take a charge and I must repeat the process of using the Radio Shack charger to re-charge the batteries. I have tried new batteries and the results have been the same. The unit is now out of warranty.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what, if any, was your solution.

The battery charger is a well know and often talked about issue. The solutions are:

1) Turn off the charger (see the manual) Electrical tape over the contacts in the cradle and use Lithiums or other AA batteries

2) Turn off the charger and use an external charger for the rechargeable batteries

3) Return it to Lionel for repair. So far they have been really good about fixing these for no charge even if it's out of warranty.
