When I try to charge the batteries, the base flashes 2 red led's at the same time. I seem to remember that the red LED's were supposed to alternate. Lionels manual says its an error code and to remove the remote from the base. But trying to recharge the batteries, the red LED's go back to flashing at the same time. Charging switch is turned on at the back of the base. Anyone know whats going on and the fix for this. Thanks

Don’t use Rechargeable batteries, use Duracell only.

One or more of the rechargeable batteries has developed a internal short. The base checks for this before starting the charge cycle. The only fix is to replace all three batteries with the 2500mah type.
If you follow Alex's advice, turn off the charger on the bottom of the base or it'll cook the Alkaline batteries!
FWIW, I use Tenergy low self-discharge NiMh batteries, and I only use the #993 charging base to charge them.
We had this problem constantly. We turned the chargers off and use rechargeable batteries and a 16 port battery charger ( we have 4 Cab-2s.) No more light show!
If memory serves me correctly, the first generation Legacy had a weak component (I think it was a voltage regulator) which was prone to failure. If yours is from this run that may be it. Our club has switched to using regular alkaline batteries in our older units.
