I was putting a drop of oil on the fan motor of a powered pa diesel #6-34598 because the motor was making noise ,when i took the shell off i also disconnected the antenna by pulling the harness out that had the wire attached to it so i could move the shell out of my way ,i put a drop of oil on the shaft & put everything back together ,thats when my problem started the engine would go so far then it would stop & the headlight would start blinking indicating signal loss ,it would not respond to the cab 2 ,as soon as i powered up the track the engine started up without even being addressed ,changed the batteries in the cab 2 & that helped some with getting the engine to respond, after doing some research on the forum i tried the ground plane way ,i layed a wire along side of the trackup to the point where the engine would stop ,the other end of the wire i connected to cover on the electrical box ,then i sent the engine slowly around the layout & when it got to the point where it stopped it went right through without stopping ,i ran this engine on 2 other independent loops & i had the same problem with the engine coming to a stop, what i can't understand is what did i do that could have caused all these problems ,this engine ran perfect up until the time i took the smoke unit apart to oil the motor it doesn't make any sense to me ,i had trouble with fixing the smoke unit on the dummy unit of this set ,i have no problems withany of my other engines ,this engine looks like it will be ok as long as i run the ground plane wire ,but i shouldn't have to do that . I will keep doing some testing on this problem to see if anything changes ,the dummy unit is still working ok keeping my fingers crossed on that one ,any ideas on what could have caused all these problems ? ,it seems that every time i try to fix one thing i mess up something else .

Check that the radio board is seated properly into the main board (RCMC). Sometimes the pins may not be plugged in all the way - you may have pulled them apart slightly when unplugging the 2-pin connector. Also make sure that the 2-pin connector is plugged in, and then check the other end of the antenna wire to make sure it is still attached to the antenna plate.

Dave ,the antenna plate looks like it is glued to the roof of the shell the wire is underneath the plate ,can i just pry the plate off ?,it does come part open but i was afraid to push to hard .I just came up from the layout now the engine starts up as soon as i power up the track & there is no response to the cab 2 at all ,only engine sounds .

Gerald M,

Before you knock yourself out trying to eliminate this problem, I recommend if you are running DCS to place a Legacy drop on the out board side of your Black line coming from the TIU to your Track, and then also go from the Legacy Base Unit directly to the opposite outside rail from your DCS Connection.  In this manner you are setting up a much stronger Legacy signal.

Give it a try you might be real surprised as to what happens.

If it worked before you took the shell off and not after you returned it to service, something got disconnected while effecting your smoke repair.  I would reverse the process and then reassemble taking care that all the boards and pins are fully seated.  In my experience, Legacy is more sensitive than TMCC  to signal issues.  Jon Z. explained the Legacy needs the complete data packet whereas TMCC will operate on an incomplete packet.  Smaller engines (both steamers and diesels) are more inclined to have signal issues because of their shorter antenna.  On significant issue between Legacy'/TMCC and DCS is that upon loss of signal - DCS engines continue to run at their last commanded speed and Legacy/TMCC engines stop on loss of signal.  Because I run multiple trains per track I have preferred the DCS solution to signal loss (except those times when a train will not stop and runs into a preceding train because it missed the "all" stop signal. )
